Diff Cover Removal - 60K Service

Hey Guys,

Before I start, yes I searched all around and got a ton of great information on changing the front and rear differential fluid. Going to get at it this weekend. I bought my Jeep with 40K miles and have limited info on prior maintenance and service intervals it went through. Got 59k on it now. Is it worth the time to remove the rear diff cover to inspect things making sure its kosher or would just pumping old fluid out and new fluid in be ok? This may sound stupid but just wanted to check. Doesn't seem like its too much of an additional effort or cost to remove it. I don't notice any whining or issues so far with the diff.

if your cover is not seeping or leaking, you would be just fine to suck it out and full it up.

I don't know much about your particular WK, but the front normally has a drain plug

much faster than sucking out the fluid.
I did the rear diff on mine with my mityvac, less messy than removing the rear cover.
Make sure you reinstall the correct fluids including additives if required.

Yeah definitely just draining the front diff to make life easy and it doesn't appear my rear diff requires an additive, I believe its the C213R, but I will double and triple check the manual.

Mine took just a little less than 2 quarts (per axel). And yes, that is the fluid.

Make sure your vehicle is on a flat level surafe before filling. On the rear my jeep i removed the rear diff cover scraped off the gasket and used some rtv to make a new gasket. Then tprqued it down ad refilled it. I also visually inspected the gears inside and cleaned. The fron was very easy with the drain plug and TC was the same way. you basically keep filling until it starts to overflow out of the fill hole.

This is all great info thanks everyone. I called the stealership today to get an estimate of cost for the same work just out of curiosity, the service guy mine as well have told me to bend over and take it, cost was ridiculous. Glad I can do this myself to ensure it gets done right and not get dicked around with my money.
