looking to buy used 05-06 Grand Cherokee Vs Nissan Xterra talk me out of the Xterra!

Alright, so I am looking for a new mostly daily driver, but maybe a twice a month wheeler... 05-06 Nissan Xterras, or the same year Grand Cherokees, both for 9-11k both with 90-100k miles one them... this vehicle will be replacing my current wheeling rig (gets 9-10 mpg freeway, it's a 94 ford bronco on 36 tall tires) because I need something more fuel efficient for my small 25-30 mile commute to college, and that is more DD friendly!

4.7 v8 grand cherokees, with the higher gear ratio and actual lowrange over the gearing of the 3.7 and no low-range seem like a no brainer

Both will be put on a spacer lift w/ 32 or 33 tall tires, and both get comparable mpg, at least stock.

What are common problems from jeeps this year? and major ones, such as transmission failure, or engines dying? Thanks in advance!

here's a couple pictures of what I plan on modifying them to... nothing crazy, just gotta be able to hit some trails on the weekend!

All the vehicles shown are on a 2 lift and have 265 size tires... both looks pretty equal clearance wise to me, and both would get rock sliders and possibly skid plates...

You should be good with either choice. Subjectively I think the WK is better looking but that aside I would be more focused on the vehicle condition. If you can find a well maintained, well kept 1 owner, that should go a lot farther to insuring it will be a good used vehicle than worring about which marque to buy IMHO..

YMMV

I love my WK and I work for Jeep so I'm a little biased but nissan makes a damn good truck too. The WK will be better towing and a little more comfy, but both should be durable and reliable for you.

The nissan's front axle can be weak with larger aggressive tires. Lots of guys do titan swaps.

I like the xterra too. I would only swap my wk for a newer pro-4x though.

If going with a WK, get a Hemi; more reliable, much better torque, and similar mpg to the 4.7.
Xterra is also great off road, with such high mileage on both, the Nissan is probably the better choice, more reliable and better build quality.

Im also a Jeep guy from a Jeep family so Im a little biased, however the Nissans are nice trucks. If you plan on wheeling I suggest trying to get QDII so you have locking front and rear and is arguably the best from the factory drivetrain. But as stated above I think finding a well maintained and documented truck is key, both trucks can be a nightmare as is any unmaintained used vehicle. Drive both see what you like, I have confidence you will prefer the Jeep over Nissan

WIth so many miles, all records are essential or else you are opening a can of worms with future repair costs. I've also owned several Nissans including Pathfinder and all had FAR less trouble than the Jeep has been; mine has 80k, been in service 16 times under warantee, and several other times since. In the new Car and Driver, the long term WKII was in for service 13 times in 33k miles and they never resolved the trans problems, even after replacing the unit. My Nissans were all driven over 100k and I canot recall ever visiting the dealer for warranty repairs.

I'd get an 08-10 WK…4.7 or HEMI.

I must agree with dmsfun - the Nissan is the obvious choice in terms of reliability and repair costs. Before I bought my own '07 GC Hemi, I was contempleting the same choice. I regret not having bought an Xterra, considering Jeep's poor service standard and build quality, which is evident from the numerous repairs and poor service by several Jeep dealers during my ownership of this vehicle. My GC has been in the shop more than any other vehicle that I have ever owned and I am still not that happy with it. However, if you like the DIY approach to repairs and have access to a lift and tools, then it may not be a bad choice for you. Again, if you are looking to invest some money in upgrades and modifications on a 4x4, the Jeep is a better option, imho. Parts are somewhat expensive on the Jeeps, but there are great suppliers to be found on the web, including Rockauto, where you may be able to save some bucks on your upgrades and replacement parts. Although the Jeep is alot of work and expensive in terms of ownership and gas mileage, they also provide a great driving experience when working properly. I like my Hemi alot, but I am also aware that this is not a vehicle for on-street racing or low 0-60 numbers. If you can live with the shortcomings and quirks of a Jeep, you'll probably come to love it. But if you want reliability and a turn-key experience, the Xterra should be the choice.
Hope this helps!
