long time lurker...

Well, i have been around a while watching, seems this is the forum for me, the others seem to be more off-road orientated. Since I do not do any off-roading (because thats causes expensive things to break), I am going to work on my WJ to make it a little more sporty on the road.

About me:
Well, I sold my 2000 Audi S4 about 2 years ago when we found out we were having a baby, so I happily dumped the money pit (426 whp/455wtq). Bought a Jeep because we have a boat we tow, and wanted a bit more room, plus I have always like the way the WJ looks, and see lots of potential, especially in looking at what some of you have done...complete awesome-sauce. I would love a SRT, but I need to tow about 4500 lbs, and the WJ does that very nicely. I am a good garage mechanic, but never had desire to do it as a career because its a fun hobby for me. Do all my own work, havent had a car to dealer/service place in probably 6 years.

How WJ is now:
2002 Limited, Black on Black 4.7L Quadra-Drive. Its in great condition, has 111xxx miles, runs like a champ, no issues what-so-ever. Only Mod is a fit in Magnaflow muffler, nice little rumble, not too loud. fixed video link

http://youtu.be/y-xHuHhxKfY

Plans:
Suspension needs gone over (replace springs and shocks).
Tuner, Intake, power adder of some type.
Addco Rear Swaybar
WK SRT8 Wheels, or WK2 20" wheels and rubber.
Tint windows
Re-paint, Stick with black, but maybe go with a deeper black.
Do not care about 1/4 mile times, its not geared for that, and its a brick. I want a quicker (5-6 sec 0-60 time), thats my ultimate goal (time will tell)

Questions:
1. If I am towing a 4500# boat/trailer, should I stick with stock height and just replace springs, isolators, and shocks, or should I go with lower springs like eibach, and get matching shocks? Want to maintain good handling, and keep Sag to a minimum.

2. Power adder, I would love HO cams, cost effective, and simple, but they are impossible to find...So I considered a remote mount turbo (worry too much about lag). I think supercharger is way to go. Not looking for huge gains, would like around 300hp or so. I figure a supercharger at a low 3-5psi should easily do this. what are my supercharger options? I realize i need a "custom" done one, but what current superchargers can i use? GM 3800 supercharger? Ford 5.0 SC? Anything else?

Sorry for long post, I am sure I will have more questions, look forward to hearing from you all, and participating in the forum, and Hello again.

Doesn't Just for Jeeps carry the HO cams? I could have sworn I saw some for sale on here recently too in the "FOR SALE" section. I've driven both the 4.7 and my 4.7HO. The difference is very noticeable. Between that, a good tune, maybe a larger bore throttle body, and a more open intake and exhaust, I think you'll easily realize 300ish HP. I've got a Flashpaq from Superchips...it made quite a difference in shift points and overall performance. It also has a towing setting I believe.

As for towing/weight...I really can't help you there. I've never towed anything that heavy. I am running stock springs with addco sways, new end links, and Bilstien shocks, and the thing feels like it's on rails. Those changes took the soccer mom right out of this thing.

Welcome! I would have to suggest the 20" WK2 wheels but then again I am a little biased....

Welcome to The Jeep Garage!

K&N intake is always a solid choice. Get the air filter 'condom' too
I have the SuperChips Tuner and it works great. It has a 'Towing' Tune.
Definitely do the Addco Rear Anti-Roll Bar. Especially if you are going to be doing any amount of heavy towing.

I just recently towed a 4600# car/flatbed setup for about 600 miles. I am on stock springs and shocks (2004 Overland V8 4x4 Towing Package). I was able to adjust my load with a little bit of tongue weight bias to limit trailer sway. Unfortunately with your boat I don't think you'll be able to do that. I really want a load leveling hitch and trailer sway setup now. Driving at night my headlights were pointing into the trees instead down at the road. It was not that bad of a 'squat' in the rear but certainly would be better with a load leveling hitch. I would not recommend lowering your Jeep if you're planning on towing your boat frequently. Also, if you don't have a trailer brake controller you should definitely get one towing that kind of weight!

Welcome to the garage!

First lets talk suspension. How much it will sag depends on tongue weight. I'm not sure if lower springs are stiffer or not but I haven't had any issue towing about 3000#, although it will sag with almost 1000# of firewood in back. As for improved handling Bilstein makes some awesome shocks for the WJ and the addco sway bars are a must for improved cornering. IMO you really cant beat the bilstein/addco setup.

For performance, here is a link to the HO cams: 4.7L HO Engine Camshafts. I would say with the cams, a cold air intake, a good exhaust (sounds like you already have one) and a superchips or SCT tune. The SCT tune will give you the benefit of being customizeable, but for minor mods I like the simplicity of the superchips flashpaq. Their performance tunes make quite a bit of difference and their towing tune made a world of difference even with an empty 5x8 cargo trailer.

For wheels, both the SRT8 WK and the WK2 wheels look fantastic in my opinion, its up to your style. Hope I've helped, looking forward to posts/pics of all your work!

Re: long time lurker...

thanks for the replies. I should add, sway with the trailer isnt too much of an issue, its weighted very well, and has dual axle with electronic brakes, so its pretty easy to pull. I do have a sag problem, so I wasnt sure if going to a 1 inch lower spring would be stiffer to help with that a bit. Thats the big thing i want to fix. I have also heard good things about blistiens, so I will be looking into those with addco for sure, and probably just sticking with factory springs.

I will be nabbing a set of those HO cams soon. And getting a CAI around Xmas time. I will get some pictures up of the Jeep soon here.

As for wheels, what does everyone think of the MB Torque wheels in flat black. I have a buddy at Discount Tire who can get me a set in 20" with decent all season tires, all for 800, thats the price of just tires. So I am really tempted. Does anyone have those wheels or know anything about them?

Again thanks for the repsonses, and keep em coming. TJXJWJ, im going to follow what you have a done a little bit. Love the way it looks. Any guess on a 0-60 time...i know, just a number, but fun to brag with.

Re: long time lurker...

i use my jeep to tow 99% of the time... i run rough country shocks (suck i would never use them again... they are great for absorbing the bumps but being gas charged they make a squish noice that drives me nuts, monrow next time for sure) I also have a 2 in budget boost... we hand fab'd an intake for my jeep and we port and polish jeep Throttle bodys (we have a 4.7 throttle body in stock ported and polished and ready to go for exchange... we can also powder coat it for you any color you want) makes a nice difference while towing... i also run a aftermarket tranny cooler for towing as well (recent addtion so i dont have much of a review yet) but i tow a 5000 boat and 2200 lb snowmobile trailer all the time... plus countless motorcycle trailers... works great as a work horse and i have no sag. i did set up quick plugs for E brakes for the boat trailer as well so i can remove the brake brain and not have it under my dash all the time...

here is a sample of the TB that i have on my jeep and the intake we made for it

No idea what my 0-60 would be...I actually just found an app for my phone that is supposed to measure that. It's by Bosch, so maybe it's somewhat accurate. Next time I'm getting on the highway I'll try to remember to turn it on and hammer it

Yea I have the Dynolicious app. It was dead on (less than 1% error) with my 60ft, 1/8 and 1/4 mile, and trap speed with my S4. I think key is setting it where it wont move.

update, got off phone with body shop about 30 min ago. They will be repainting the WJ a deep black, with a blue offset stripe and pinstrip next to it. Identical to the new Charger SRTs. So should look good I hope with my black wheels, once those finally come! Here is a reference picture of what it will look like.
