06 Hemi burnt valve? runs rough

My wife's 06 5.7 hemi GC limited is running rough. It doesn't make any ticking or odd noises. It idles poorly and had no power and falls flat under 2500 rpm. I had a friend scan it and it said MDS issue or valve issue. Coils and injectors are fine. I took it to the dealer and confirmed the same thing.they want to pull the left head assuming it is a bad valve.
I would think that a compression test would confirm a bad valve but he said not on a hemi. If it was a valve seat I would think the motor would come apart. I drove it for a half hour to get it to the dealer. I run Castrol 5w20. I am at a loss and the dealer said I'm looking at $1700-1900 if it is a bad valve. I've searched and it doesn't seem like I can find anything related to an '06. I am aware of the '03 valve probs. If this was a spring or lifter or rocker arm wouldn't this make a loud ticking noise.
What could this be? I need to know if the dealer is headed in the right direction by pulling the head off.
Thanks
Eric

The symptoms don't sound like an engine running well besides having a valve issue.
A V8 with only one burnt valve wouldn't drive drastically different to a healthy engine.
5.7's do NOT have a history of valve failures.
Have you had the codes cleared/reset?
Yes, a valve issue WILL show up on a comp test. Subsequent "wet" comp test can be done to ascertain if the bottom or top end has the issue.
Dealer is too keen to take the head off. Diagnose first, then fix. Too many mechanics shops are packed to the rafters with dickheads these days, the type who take gambles, with YOUR money.

went to the dealer today to see if they did anything and they didnt. so I asked for the trouble report and it is a code p1417. the MDS solenoid tested good so according to the service writer the lifter is bad or the oil passage is clogged. anybody able to hlp me with this? might start a new thread for the p1417 code.....

Does it have loud hydraulic lifter noise?

no ill noises at all. BTW I have over 25 years mech exp. This damn thing has me baffled. If it was a old 350 I could fix it blind folded.... I think the MDS is stuck on cylinder 7. If it was a bad lifter I would get all kinds of chatter I would think....but then again these motors are designed to run with colapsed lifters...ugghhhh!

Start that new thread mate, see what others have to say. I'm a little baffled to be honest.
