Soon to be Jeep owner with some questions

Hi all,

I am in the process of purchasing my first Jeep and am looking forward to taking it home. We settled on a 2013 GC Laredo 4x4 with the Laredo E package and Security and Convenience group.

We really wanted a Laredo X but it was just a bit too far out of our price range right now. That said, I plan on upgrading some things over the next year and am looking for some advice - I have scoured through the forums but could not find a definitive answer on a few things.

I plan to upgrade:

  • Replace stock RES 130 with 430N radio
  • Replace manual climate control with ATC
  • Add leather seats (likely Katskin)
  • Add heated driver/passenger seats

For the radio, how do I know what will be plug and play with my 2013 GC? I have the Sirius/Bluetooth/Voicecommand option right now with the 130 so from what I understand it's a simply swap to go to the 430N. I would prefer to pick up a used one for under $1000 on eBay or somewhere, what should I be looking for in regards to part #s and models? I see RHB/RHZ and high-speed/low-speed mentioned a bunch, how do I know which will work with mine?

The ATC upgrade and heated seats upgrades have me wondering as well. Are the Mopar heated seats found here (Heated Seats - Jeep Grand Cherokee & Liberty - Item # 82210854, 82211223, & 82211224) the actual stock heated seats?

I am wondering if when I buy the ATC if I get the one that comes with the heated seats buttons and install the Mopar OEM seats, can I use the buttons in the ATC instead of separate controls on the sides of the seats?

Since my GC comes with remote start I would prefer to go that route if possible so that the remote start activates the heated seats like it does on the X/Limited, etc.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to spending a lot of time here!

-Chris

Personally, I would wait and save more money for a bigger down payment on the X. Probably be cheaper in the long run and certainly less headaches with all the major changes you want to make to the E.

Thanks for the suggestion - we debated this but a few things are forcing our hand. The wife's car is not going to last much longer so we need to buy sooner than later.

We also have a four month old and wanted a 4x4 this winter for the many expected snowy trips to visit grandparents (2 and 3 hours away).

I've pretty much resigned myself to the E and hope to slowly get it the way we originally wanted...

Why not look at used with the options you want? I'm sure there's plenty of them out there.

We searched around for awhile and didn't find anything in the used market that was what we wanted without a crazy amount of miles on it. We might still have gone that route anyway but I got a really great deal on the 2013 GC (2% below total invoice) so couldn't pass up the opportunity to go new.

Unfortunately, it means some of the 'wants' are going to have to be added in later. We are ok with that, I'm just trying to decide the order of doing things and need to know the answer to the heated seats question before I can buy the ATC, for instance.

I've read on here before that the Mopar heated seats have their own switches and will not work like stock heated seats (regarding the button location), although I would think anything could be done.

I would try and get the dealer to add the heated seats at the very least even if you have to add a few hundred to the purchase price instead of doing it later. It is not as straightforward as the other upgrades you want to do.

I would do your first upgrade, or maybe think about going aftermarket. I would skip your other "wishes". In the end, it may have been cheaper just to buy the X. You have about $4K+ in options listed there (as "wants") -- if paying new, retail price. That doesn't include install.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The radio upgrade is my first priority, but I figured I should do the ATC at the same time while I have the bezels off - just trying to decide which ATC unit to get based on the heated seats things.

I might just go with the normal ATC without heated seats and deal with the aftermarket switches if/when I get around to that upgrade in the future. I won't be able to have them turn on with the remote start but I'm sure it wouldn't take long for them to get toasty once I get in.

The radio and atc would be the easiest and cheapest upgrade that you can do yourself. The seat part is the biggie since I don't think anyone has incorporated the atc with heated seats installed after purchase.
