Upgrading from Base 130 to 730n?

Hi guys - hoping someone can help me out. I searched through the forums and online and didn't see an answer to this particular question.

One of the vehicle options I'm looking at is a standard Laredo E with nothing extra. I want to add the 730n down the road and am wondering since it comes with uConnect in the head unit, what would I need to add to get that working at the same time? I would need to add a mic, anything else? Would I need to replace the rearview mirror?

Also, my main question.. The base model will not have remote USB in the armrest - if I upgrade to the 730n afterwards, is it possible to add this, or at the very least in the glovebox?

I mainly want the uConnect for the iPhone/iPod connectivity and from what I've read you cannot control the iPod by plugging it into the face of the radio, it has to be the remote USB plug. Is this true? If so, do I just need to buy an extra cable to go from the HU to the glovebox or armrest?

Trying to decide between a basic model and paying an extra $3000 for one that comes with Security & Convenience and 20" wheels and Nav. Much better bang for my buck on the 20" model but would be stretching our budget thin.

Thanks for any help/suggestions/feedback!

I did your exact upgrade, it was quite simple. You can buy the cable you need but you'll need to figure out a way to run the cable to console. I didn't see a hole in the center console so you would need to drill a hold to get to cable through. I believe it is around $80.

I also installed a lockpick which include an ipod 30 pin cable which is plenty long to run to the console. You get a ton of features with the lockpick so I felt it was worth it. I have not installed the cable to the center console but it looks to be fairly straightforward. I've been holding out for an iphone 5 video out solution. Probably won't happen but good luck to you.

FYI...

If you want SMS capability in the entertainment system, and you don't need voice command of the Nav system (not that it works all that well), you may want to look at the 430N instead. Some folks also prefer the Garmin Nav software in the 430N to whatever is in the 730N.

I opted for the 730N because of the voice control system. In use, (unless using saved locations) the Nav system isn't very voice-friendly (you have to use the menu system even with voice input, and the menus are very poor at that point). I often just wait for a red light to enter my info. A Lockpick would solve that anyway.

Chris,
I did this exact upgrade you are wanting to accomplish, I bought a base model Laredo and installed the 730N, Uconnect, backup camera and sensors and remote start. If you are somewhat tech savy, you can actually do some of the work yourself. (as far as the installation of the stereo and uconnect)

The cheapest oem parts I found are at stevewhite motors - These are the parts you will need for the uconnect if you are upgrading to the RHR-

RAM Dodge Chrysler Jeep Uconnect Microphone Mygig Rear Mirror RER RHR Mopar | eBay

AND

RAM Dodge Chrysler Jeep Uconnect Navigation Jumper Harness Mirror RER RHR Mopar | eBay

You will need both the mirror and the wire kit. The other uconnect kits are for radio's that come with a module are stereo's that do not have the integrated bluetooth.

You can easily remove the benzel around your stereo and you will find four screws. After removal of these 4 screws the radio comes right out. If you have the connection for the uconnect you can run the wire from the mirror along the top of windshield and down the A pillar, underneath the steering column and then into the stereo housing.

Connect the new 730N to existing wiring and plug the new bluetooth in as well. You will need to get the vehicle flashed, but this part of the install will take roughly an hour and will save you a few hundred dollars.
