What about a custom Magnaflow setup...?

I am tired of having a quiet Jeep. So I've been researching exhaust systems. I only want to spend aprox. $500 so the Dynomax catback and the Gibson axleback seem like my best bets.

So I went down to the local muffler guy to ask about installation. He put the Jeep up on the lift to take a look at the stock system, and he recommended doing a custom Magnaflow setup. Basically he would cut out the stock mufflers (including the big one in the middle) and replace the rears with a couple of Magnaflow 12225's and the big center muffler (or whatever that thing is) with two Magnaflow 10415's. He'd re-use all the stock tubing, just cut and weld where needed. Also, included in his quote was a pair of 4" polished double walled tips. All this for $650.

I was intrigued, but told him I was nervous because i have no clue what it will sound like (unlike the kits which I can listen to on Youtube). So he said, let's do this... skip the Magnaflow 10415's in the middle and just go straight pipes through there all the way back to the Magnaflow 12225's. That would make it louder (which is my goal) and save about $215 in parts and labor (so $435 installed with tips). If it's too loud, he said we could always add back the Magnaflow 10415's to the middle at a later date.

Seems like a budget way to get some nice Magnaflow hardware in there. I'm intrigued and tempted to pull the trigger. But here are my questions about this...
  1. Has anybody done anything like this?
  2. What do you think it would sound like?
  3. What do you think of the Magnaflow 12225's in the rear?
  4. What are your thoughts about replacing the big ass center muffler with two Magnaflow 10415's?
  5. If I skip the 10415's at the beginning, are straight pipes okay? Or should I ask him to install an x-pipe to mimic a catback system?

Help!!

I think you'll get drone if u replace the resonator with straight pipes, if that matters to you.

Wouldn't the Magnaflow 10415's in the middle of the system act as resonators?

Sorry if that's a dumb question. I don't know much about exhaust.

Sounds like you have a decent exhaust guy, and I would bet the MF would sound great.

But unfortunately as Berk points out, drone will be the challenge especially when coasting in MDS mode. Ask your tech if he has an attack plan for it and what to do if these custom efforts cause a droning issue.

Doing a little bit more research about that center section (where the stock resonator sits)...

Rather than do just straight pipes, or even straight pipes with the Magnaflow 10415's, how about an x-pipe setup? I've been reading that they equalize back pressure from side to side and improve scavenging (I think that's good).

So if you subscribe to that theory (and it seems sound since most cat-back systems have some sort of x-pipe), then how about these two Magnaflow options:

Curious to hear your thoughts...

Magnaflow 10780: Looks like your typical x-pipe...

Magnaflow 11385: This is essentially a resonated x-pipe. Folks on other forums (not Jeep) say it eliminates drone...

One last posting for the night... (can you tell I have exhaust on the brain?)

Doing a custom system appeals to me cuz I like to be different, but I also fear the unknown sound that may come out of this thing. So I did a search on Youtube for folks with Magnaflow muffler setups (not cat-back kits). If found this guy...

No mention of what parts he's using other than a Magnaflow x-pipe. Not sure on the rest. But the sound is unreal!!

Headed to a different muffler shop for a second opinion...

Sure wish I was getting more discussion on this thread... Kind of feels like I'm talking to myself.

Not to discourage you, but there have been quite a few folks here that have tried similar things and ended up wasting their money, giving up in frustration. You should have found several threads as this subject comes up about every 3 months. Some have used very good and well known muffler shops and ended up with a system that sounded like crap.

Just saying thats its your coin, but you will do better in the long run with one of the name brand systems, like the corsa. They have done the hard research work and resolved many of the sound issues.

Not discouraged at all...

I don't understand the comment about name brands. I am looking at name brands... Magnaflow and Flowmaster. The only difference is that I'm contemplating a custom install instead of a complete system in order to keep the cost down.

Are you saying that a custom system will sound bad...?

Re: What about a custom Magnaflow setup...?

I think he's merely saying that a complete system has had the R&D to eliminate or atleast reduce some of the drone issues that are common with MDS. I don't have first hand experience (yet-it's on my list) with the exhaust systems for these but I would think that just replacing the mufflers and leaving the stock resonator in place would be passable for a decent sound improvement but the full cat-back systems are going to give the best sound with minimal drone. Just my .02

Re: What about a custom Magnaflow setup...?

I'm very interested as well. I guess I'd like to know more about which cyl. shut down with MDS. Understanding that, if they are always the same, or not, might help build the right header/exhaust combination to reduce or eliminate the drone.
