How To: Removing Chrome Face of Grille

Lots of questions about this, without alot of pictures or step by step for people who are still a little scared or unsure about doing this for the first time. So I hope this helps a little:)

First- You're going to want to pop all the tabs off of the top plastic piece like so. Just run your fingers beneath the plastic piece on each side and pop off all the tabs. Really nothing to it.

Second- Use a screwdriver or something similar to either push up, or push down the silver tabs to pop them out of the upper plastic piece. You will see these tabs if you look down the vent on the right side, or if you pull the grille slightly towards you, and access them from the back(which I did). As you pop the tabs out, pull on the chrome at the same time and give it a good tug to pop them out. I start on the far right and pop off the first 2 tabs with a screwdriver while pulling on the chrome grille face simultaneously.

Third - Once I get the first 2 or 3 tabs popped off, I grab the chrome face from the bottom and pull on it starting from the corner, and pop the bottom tabs off. Just give them a tug and they all pop out really easily. Just work your way across the grille.

Fourth - After I have most of the bottom tabs popped(I leave the bottom left still in), I move back to the top and pry off the other tabs by pulling on the chrome grille face as before. By this point, these tabs are just poppin off pretty easily.

Fifth - Okay, so you're pretty much home free. Grille should be hangin' on like this. I'm sure by now, you'll know what to do next. Pop the last corner tabs out and pull the grille away from your Jeep. Enjoy :D

Tip: When popping the top tabs out, LOOK at which way the locking stub is facing. If the tab is hooked on the top, PUSH it down to release(while pulling the grille face). If the tab is hooked from the bottom, PUSH it up from the bottom(while again, pulling the grille face).

Well make sure you are either pushing them up or down depending on which side the tab thing is facing. And while you push it, yank back on the chrome face with your other hand. I got pretty frustrated trying it, so that's basically when I just pulled it as hard as I could (lol) and it popped the top right side off. The rest is a piece of cake after that.

I need to also remove the mesh as I am switching the Overland grille out for an Altitude this week. All the search results I have found state that the bumper cover must come off. If I use this method, can I get the mesh off too? The Altitude grille is one piece with mesh attached, and from what I see on the Overland grille it is too. Would love to find a way for a complete grille swap without pulling bumper cover........but if have to I have to.

You will have to remove the bumper.

It's not too bad, I did it a few times. You will need plastic rivets & gun. Harbor freight sells an inexpensive kit that's good enough to handle the job.

I got extra rivets as I assumed I would break the ones I eed to remove. Thought I could pull it off without a gun. Thanks for the heads up.
