2012 SRT8 Steering Wheel Wobble/Vibraiton

Posting this around, hoping someone will be able to help. Thanks,

Hi All,

Looking for some help or support as to why the steering wheel in my 2012 SRT8 randomly wobbles/vibrates. It is not as violent as the "Jeep Death Wobble", but every now and then the steering wheel has a very noticeable wobble/vibration. Even when it is not doing its worst wobbling, I still feel way to much vibration in the steering wheel. My dealer says it is because of bad tire wear, but then has no explanation as to why the tires have worn badly. My concern is that there is something wrong in the front suspension or alignment. The wobble/vibration has occurred at various speeds and conditions. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Other than this, my Jeep has been rock solid and I love it.

Thanks

the most obvious would be the tires. Is it at only certain speeds or all the time?

It doesnt happen all of the time. And it has occurred at various speeds ranging from 20-60mph. Dont recall experience it over 60

sounds like a tire or balance

Thats strange. Have you been rotating your tires? I dont have any wobble or vibration, but my truck does hunt from side to side badly on worn and sunken lane roads, but thats just because of the 10" wheels and super wide tires on the front. Did the dealer check the balance, alignment, etc?

You would think that an wheel and tire out of balance would cause a constant vibration unless some roads make it worse than others.

It really depends, a bad tire will set up a harmonic and only vibrate at certain speed which can be affected by road conditions. Since he calls it a wobble and vibration I'm fairly confident it's a bad tire. I have had this a couple times on various vehicles the worst being a Volvo V70R which coincidentally had Pirelli tires.

Problems like this are a bear to find and usually take evaluating every tire and wheel off the vehicle using a high quality balance machine like a Hunter 9800. Usually dealers don't have near the skill or equipment to sort something like this out. Find a high end tire store and work with them to sort it out. Your tire warranty is good at any dealer who carries Pirelli.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have taken my Jeep in for all regular maintenance and scheduled rotations. I currently have about 20K on the odometer and I first starting noticing this around 11-12k. When I take it in for service I ask them to check alignment and balance each time. I have had some concern with the dealership being able to provide proper maintenance. One time they told me that they rotated the tires and they hadn't.

When the wooble first happened I thought that maybe a wheel weight or something had come off causing it to be out of balance, but was told that this was not the case. I dont understand how, if it is a tire issue, why it wouldn't happen all of the time. There are plenty of times when it is rock solid like I would expect.

I will try to take video of the steering wheel next time it shakes. A little better description of what I am experiencing at its worst is a rapid shaking "back and forth clockwise to counter clockwise direction" of about 5 -10 degrees. So the steering will shakes back in forth in the movement that you would turn the wheel to turn the Jeep.

I am also considering taking it to another shop that mostly works on high performance vehicles to get a second look at it.

Any additional input is greatly appreciated.

Every new tire comes with a manufacturers warranty for defects. It's not Jeep who warranty's your tires, it's Pirelli. Your dealer may be able to take care of it because they are also a Pirelli dealer but it means you can go anywhere to have a defective tire warrantied.

Look around in the package they gave you at delivery, it should have a booklet with the Pirelli warranty info.

Now, at 20K miles, assuming you have the 3 season tires you are past the mileage and wear that will get you any replacement as replacements are pro-rated based on wear.

America's Tires here wants $90 a tire for a road hazard warranty. That covers free replacemnet as long as there is legal tread. I haven't done it yet.
