Custom iPhone dashboard dock

Hey guys. I put this together last spring when I first got my jeep but never got a chance to do a write up. Basically what I built was a dock for my iPhone 4s to allow it to play music (ipod, pandora, youtube) and also give me navigation to my factory 6 disc radio.

Tools used:
Dremel

Materials
Apple universal dock adapter (9 bucks for a 3 pack at the apple store)

Dock extender from ebay (link)
iSimple Aux Adapter Interface (ebay)
Epoxy (I used some a friend that does autobody had laying around)
Gray interior spray paint (optional)
Spare radio trim

1. Remove radio trim and radio

2. Connect iSimple to VES port in the back of the radio. You cannot use this install if you have the rear VES system.

3. Connect the dock extender to the iPhone port on the iSimple. This is where I'd like to modify my design. The iSimple and the dock extender I got both have the little buttons on the side you have to push to release the connection from the base of the iPhone. Knowing this and knowing the extender would be inside the dash i used the dremel to grind off the little metal locks that clip the phone in. The newer style cable pops in the base of the phone and can be removed without pushing in on clips. I'd like to install the new style cable to be able to lock the phone down in the dock but be able to pull it out without needing to push in the buttons. With the metal tabs filed off like I've done it works but the phone sometimes comes lose while driving over bumpy roads

4. Trace an area smaller than the top of the universal dock connector to be cut out and secure the dock connector to the radio trim with epoxy. I taped it down with masking tape while drying.

5. In order to get the angle correct between the cable and the universal dock connector I inseterted the cable through the hole and clipped the iphone in on the other side. I then applied epoxy to the cable to secure it in place.

6. Once it is all dry you simply tuck all the wires in to the radio surround and re-install the trim. The cable had just enough clearance over the top of the radio.

7. You select the AUX mode from the mode button on your stereo. You can skip songs using your steering wheel controls.

8. One tip I'd give is to download and use the WAZE navigation app which gives you turn by turn navigation and nicely dims the music down to announce your directions.

I haven't had a chance to paint it gray yet to make it blend in a little more. I'll update if I get around to it.

Cheers,
Danny

I wonder if the radio would still work with a USB splitter so I could have both the dock and a cable in the center console.

Thanks!

There isn't actually a USB port on the iSimple. It is more of a circular plug at one end that plugs into the iSimple and the ipod plug on the other side.

I wouldn't know, my phone is jailbroken so I'm still running ios 5 with the original maps app. I find I use that if I just need to see where a location is but don't need to be told how to get there and use Waze when i'm traveling to an area I don't know and need turn by turn.

Same here…Jailbroken on iOS 5.

Mine is jail broken also on iOS 5

But u can still download the new google maps app (different from the stock google map found on ios5). It has turn by turn and voice nav. I only have iOS 6 on my iPad .

I've used Waze and I can say the new google maps app is better. Just my .02 give it a try.
