Latest Tablet

This may get moved to one of the specialized forums but not sure which one. Could go in Audio/Visual or DIV or Troubles.

As you know I have been working on a unified display unit for my '12 Laredo. It needs to be in a flat touch screen form factor and be able to play music/video, act as a Sat-Nav, be a backup camera, and provide an engine display with parameter and fault code readouts.

So far I've been working mainly with Android & have tried things with an iPad but none have been a complete answer, biggest stumbling block has been a composite input for the rear view camera and so far had been doing without a CD/DVD input. No more.

Now am working with an Acer w510 tablet that was just released and Microsoft had a "Cyber-Monday" special but even at list is is $100 less than an iPad with the same memory. And can expand with a micro-SD card of up to 64 GB. And it reads flash drives.

So far have seen everything on my list work. Are some glitches but minor. Can even use a lot of peripherals I already had such as the CD/DVD player/recorder.

Why ? Because this is running the full Windows 8 OS. Not the brane-ded RT of the current Surface but the full Windows distro. All of the drivers for my peripherals like the EasyCap work. Any USB device is plug and play. And it has an HDMI output for a back seat display. Plus a touch/swipe screen.

The one limitation I have seen is that it uses "A-GPS" which effectively means it does not have any. However a BU-353 from the junque box solved that.

The other issue is that the 10" form factor does not fit anywhere well but I expect there will be a 7" "mini" version in 2-3Q13 in the $300-$400 range. Samsung, Microsoft, Toshiba, and Dell all have thingies in the works.

Suspect Android and iOS will stay around for cell phones and such, I like seeing incoming calls on my wris****ch and the cell makes a good hot spot.

BYOD just took a big step forward.

Ill give this a shot. I think it means he doesn't like the gauges, evic or radio/ nav/ backup cam and wants all of these functions and the ability to monitor any and every engine sensor from a tablet. Whew.... Pad (Thai) gett. Sorry couldn't resist. I hope I summed it up right!!!

I have to applaud you on your efforts to create the perfect Digital Media Receiver. Pioneer's AppRadio still has problems between the software and hardware. JVC might be a good choice, I am still doing research on their lines and apps. Parrot is due with their Android base version shortly which will have 4 USB ports, and the IPAD 4 still does not have all the I/O needed to pull this off.

Parrot ASTEROID Smart Digital media receiver with GPS navigation at Crutchfield.com

I am looking into using the Garmin GLO for my iPhone as the SAT/NAV external antenna so I can take advantage of both SAT systems.https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=448&pID=109827 Also, did you do anything with SirusXM? I am looking to see how I can hookup the XM Skydock into the iPhone or a tablet. For me it would the missing link in regards to hardware. The key for the software would be that Navigation software screen pops up when directions are being issued and the music plays in the background as in the current Nav radios.

This would be the last phase of my upgrade to great a digital media receiver.

Best for now.:)

sounds awesome. you should take a look at the "microstang" that Microsoft had West Coast Customs make for them. It replaces the dash and nav with a Win8 tablet with flick gestures to go between different digital dash boards. I am sure you can find a stream of the broadcast online.
