new 13, 3.6 question

Hey all,
Just got a 13 mineral gray Laredo with 3.6 and i love it. Rides nice, has plenty of power, and goin from a hemi crew cab ram to this, it like a prius gas wise to me.
I was curious if anyone knew why my oil cap says 5-20, my wife's 11 Durango with the same engine says 5-30. When I got my jeep I thought cool same filter and oil, can just get the jugs and use them for both. But not a big deal, I was just wondering what's the difference? Mine does say vvt on the cover and the dango doesn't.

Welcome!

My wifes 11 durango uses 5w30 too

Have they gone to a thinner oil in the '13 Pentastar? What does your owner's manual say? They must be tightening up on the clearances.

Check what the manual says. Mine takes 5w30.

Yep just looked says 5-20 recommended. Supposed to get about 6 inches of snow and a lot of wind here tomorrow, pretty excited to see how she does. I always liked grand Cherokees and thought they have always been really sharp trucks. After having this one now 3 weeks tomorrow, wish I got one sooner!

I doubt they changed anything in the engine, just found that it helps get 1/100 of a mpg higher and doesn't hurt anything. All 3.6s have had VVT since it was released back in 10 on the 11 GC, they just didn't advertise it on the engine cover until I believe 2012. Does the manual say anything about being able to substitute 5w30?

I didn't see anything about a substitute. Only spot I looked was in the back under fluids and capacity section. All it said was Chrysler recommend 5-20 for the 3.6 and hemi.

My '12 manual says 5W-30 in the 3.6, 5W-20 in the 5.7. Did they put on the wrong oil filler cap?

Are you pretty satisfied with the Penstar engine? I am looking into picking up a 13 for the wife and want to make sure how well it performs up hill and around town. I'm a little disappointed Jeep is still using the 5 speed tranny. Thanks

Wait for a '14 and get the 8-speed/Pentastar combo.

i really like the penstar. i think its got plenty of get up and go. its no hot rod, but for a suv it had more then i thought it would. it does fine on hills, it does down shift alot. Or it seems like it to me, but i am coming off of a hemi ram. that thing never had to down shift to go up hill. the jeep is a tank in the snow. we just got 8 inches, wind, drifts and all. i would take this jeep over the ram in the snow any day.
