Transmission Temperature Gauge
 
I want to install a transmission temp gauge for towing purposes. Is the best course of action to remove the pan and have a weld nut welded on to screw in the sensor? Thanks!

There are a couple of ways to go about it. Here are my thoughts:

1. The option that you are considering. While it is out ad a drain plug.

2. Install an aftermarket cast aluminum pan with the plug installed and can be pre-tapped for the probe size of your choice. The added bonus of the aftermarket cast aluminum pan has cooling fins that lower trans temps.

I went with #2. I went with a PML pan tapped for a 1/8" probe. The added bonus is that it holds two additional quarts of ATF. I plan to install an Autometer trans temp gauge sooner than later. I got it directly from PML: http://www.yourcovers.com/transpan_10304.php

Thanks for the info. Can I use the drain plug hole for the sensor or does an additional hole need to be installed? What's the benefit of the extra fluid? Does it run cooler? If the pan sits lower isn' there an increased risk of ground contact?

First off... The pan was tapped with a second hole for the sensor. That tapped hole is the black plug in the center of the picture. I don't know how you would used the drain plug hole for both a sensor and a drain. The drain plug was the big plus in this for me and I would not want to loose that functionality. The hole for the temp sensor was an added bonus and worth the additional $40. (I am not brave or stupid enough to drill and tap aluminum with the tools that I have.)

Benefit of extra fluid? Just like additional oil helps an engine, additional ATF helps a transmission. It helps handle heat.

Does the trans run cooler? IIRC-Their website says that you can expect a 10-15 degree F drop in trans temps. I have noticed that the transmission stays out of overdrive longer on colder mornings. It takes 2-3 miles longer to reach operating temp when outside temps are below freezing.

Is there risk of ground contact? Yes that is always a possibility but not likely for me. I also have slightly larger tires on the WJ so I picked up some addition height there. If that is a concern then one of the other pans (that holds more fluid) is available and it fits under the factory transfer case skid plate. I would say this one is .5" deeper on one side and 1" deeper on the other. The major difference is that the stock pan was a step type more like this PML pan: YourCovers.com Dodge RFE Transmission Pan, Low Profile, with Clearance for Exhaust and Frame Cross Members

Thanks for the info it helps alot. The video was also helpful. The only thing left is to decide whether to fork over the $$$$. It looks like its worth it though. I do have a couple more issues I need to eventually address.
1) Is replacing the heated seat elements terribly difficult? Neither work and my vehicle missed being eligible for the (2006 I think) recall by 31 days.
2) Thge vacuum hose that controls the cruise control needs replacing though i'm unclear as to its location.
