iPhone 5 via USB = no music

Hey guys,

I have an iPhone 5 I'm having issues working with my 730N. For some reason, everytime I plug my iPhone 5 in via USB, there's no music to play. All the playlists are there, but they are all empty. I use iTunes match, but have a ton of music downloaded to the phone. I can play spotify and pandora just fine over USB, but no luck with all the music on my phone.

Any ideas? It's really annoying to not be able to play music when my phone is charging.

I just use BlueTooth for streaming from my iPhone...works great. And it also works while charging just fine.

How are you able to send via bluetooth while charging? Don't you get the "Accessory connected" message when you go to the music app on your iphone?

thanks for the reply.

No, I've never gotten that message ever...not in the WK2, not in any other charging situation, either. That goes for music playback or phone calls via bluetooth.

Do note I'm not charging from the 730N USB port--my charging cable is routed from my mount to a 12v adapter that lives in the center console compartment below the sound system.

Ah, that would be because I'm plugged into the USB ports going to the 730n. The iPhone goes into external accessory controlled mode and keeps you from being able to control music from the iPhone. Even if you could, the playlists are empty when browsing on the 730n.

It's silly that I should have to use a 12v cigarette lighter port when theres a usb port in the center console for this very purpose. I know I can't be the only one here that feels that way. When you spend a lot of money on a brand new car, you should expect everything to work Properly. Seems like a bug.

No, it's not really a "bug"...the 730n becomes "the accessory" due to the way an external device integrates with it, although it's certainly inconvenient. The phone can only send audio to one device at a time...by design. Try using the USB port in the center arm rest compartment to just supply the power you need...and then use BlueTooth streaming. The only reason I use a 12v USB power adapter is because I have a phone mount and route the cable unobtrusively from there. It's all hidden.

I have the 430n and had similar issues with the iphone5 connected to the USB, I could see the playlists but nothing would play. I found that if I changed the setting on the iPhone so that it only lists music which is actually downloaded to the phone (it does not show any iTunes Match music), I had much better luck getting it to play.

But it did still seem a bit buggy. So for now I just have an old iPod classic loaded up and connected via USB in the center console, which works well. And for the times when I want to play something that is on my phone, the BT streaming works well enough.

Yeah, I might have to do the same thing. If I need to charge my phone, but also want to play music through it, I'm SOL. I can change the input to bluetooth, but it will play the current track, I have no way of controlling it. Like I said earlier, the music app on my iPhone says "Accessory connected".

I dont get why you cant plug the phone into the hidden lighter plug in the center console?
That is what I do and stream music via bluetooth just fine.

Mufugger, this issue is because the mobile device can only have one "Accessory" connection at a time. Don't assume that changing out the iPhone for something else will necessarily fix the situation...be sure you verify first before you plunk down any money.

As I mentioned before, I'm perfectly happy with using BlueTooth for streaming from my iPhone...and with the way I mounted it, I have complete access to the "controls" for the few times I need them while driving.

Oh, I definitely don't plan on replacing the iPhone, I understand what's happening. The bug that the manufacturer needs to fix is the usb browsing on the unit with an iPhone 5 that uses iTunes match. Like I said earlier, I can see all the playlists on the 730N when connected via USB, but they are all empty. If this bug was addressed that would make me happy. :)

I stopped using Match on my iPhone because I prefer all the music to be "on" my device...hard to listen from the cloud when you're on a plane. ;) Awhile ago, I had some problems with playlists being blank, but that resolved with the current software, at least on my phone.
