New Member. New WJ has a tail light problem

Hi all,

I have owned my 2000 WJ for 3 days now. 4.0L. Went to change the tail light/brake light bulb (top) and nothing happened. So I pulled the assy off and Eureka! Looks like it got submerged while the lights were on, shorted and melted (it would have been the only bulb in use). Sound like a good diagnosis?

So my voltmeter ran off on me. Anybody know which pins in the connectors go to which tabs so I can bypass the housing until I can junk yard dive for a new one? Anything I should look for while I'm there?

Any other WJ advice will be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure about the by pass, but if you decide to replace check out Rock Auto.

WJ's make a habit of melting those sockets because the boards overheat... no water necessary. When you replace them you should do it with led tail lights.

The problem also seems to be with the small tabs on the sockets, they make bad contact, which causes a low resistance, and the unit heats up locally and melts the plastic.
Unfortunately i can't send the connector pin-out from my work computer and my home computer just died on me yesterday night:mad:.
I can tell you which pin is for what, independent of LH or RH unit.
Seems that the numbering you gave to it is the right numbering.
1= back-up lamp feed
2= rear fog lamp relay output (export)
3= park lamp relay output
4= right turn signal
5= ground
6= primary brake switch signal

Not sure which pin is connected to which tab, just make a simple test circuit with a 1.5 V battery and a 1.5 V lamp and check which pin is connected to which tab.

Thank you very much, that's all I need! Greatly appreciated! Went to the junkyard today and they had no WJ in the yard. They said it was because of the cash for clunkers program. Alright, I'll see if I can bypass this SOB.

Thanks again for the help. I wrote a write up on the fix here... http://www.jeepgarage.org/f203/wj-99...xed-52407.html
