Towing/Transmission Cooler

Brand new to the site. I have a 2012 WK2 altitude edition, V6 with tow pack, 4x2. The boat I'll be towing is around 3500lbs when loaded. My question is did my model jeep come with a transmission cooler with the factory tow package? If not, do I need one for this size load? Anything else I need to add/do to safely tow this size load? Thanks for the help in advance!

Re: Towing/Transmission Cooler

The V6 tow group doesn't include any additional cooling. You're good to go to tow up to 5000 lbs. You should not have any issues.

I recommend using autostick to max out the transmission to the 4th gear. The 5th gear is overdrive (O/D). For some reason the V6 transmission doesn't have a separate "O/D Off" button, so limiting the transmission to the 4th gear essentially turns off overdrive.

Oh and welcome!!

Re: Towing/Transmission Cooler

I planned to use the shifter when towing to give it some more pull power especially at slower speeds...I guess I could always stop shifting up at 4 to keep it out of O/D. Is this what you were referring to as "autostick"?

Yes the shifter which you can tap left and right to change gears. Chrysler calls it autostick.

The selector only sets your maximum gear so it's not a true autostick.

Also, your EVIC has the ability to tell you the transmission temperature while you drive. Mine typically runs at 172F.

So by using autostick in the 1st gear, it's not getting any more "power" than I would in D (o/d), all it's doing is limiting the transmission from switching to a higher gear??

No it just limits the highest gear.

Re: Towing/Transmission Cooler

Well that was misleading by jeep...so no need to change gears when accelerating while towing, just put it in 4th to kill the o/d.

I think its more of misinterpretation, by those not that familiar with transmissions or transmission terms, than misleading. The V6 transmission, provided by Mercedes, has been used for several years in many vehicles, its not a Jeep unique thing.

Are you sure about that because mine does not work in this manner. Mine will change gears when i select them, i dont think it is a gear limiter

Re: Towing/Transmission Cooler

You can change gears on the fly and also limit the highest automatic gear.

If you put it in 3rd gear for example, it won't automatically go higher than that. The transmission will automatically cycle between 1, 2 & 3 though. You can cycle between those gears yourself if you want too.

Yes. Put in 4th then slow down to a stop. It will start out in 1st.
