WJ 99-04 Tail light assembly - $.0.75 FIXED!

Hey all,

I happily drove my very first Jeep home a few days ago. 2000 WJ with 150k miles and a new 4.0L I6.

On the way home, I my wife noticed my driver side brake light was out. Running lights, turn signal and backups work fine. Just the brake side of the dual filament bulb.

Went to change the bulb (socket thing threw me for a loop) and found this...

I tried getting this thing apart, but no luck. So I went digging for wiring diagrams and busted out the red neck voltmeter (9V and a few inches of wire). The brake light is the top right pin (above picture) and the running lights are the bottom right pin. The bottom middle pin is the ground for all three bulbs.

Once I had the pins figured out, I soldered some new leads onto the socket tabs.

Ain't exactly pretty, but it did the trick. I should have put tin foil over those plastic bits, but I wasn't thinking.

Next step was splicing some new leads into the wiring harness above the clip. Here's the 50 cents worth of clip wire terminals and 25 cents worth of 16ga wire I used.

Plugged it back in and fired it up. Works like a charm. Local parts store wanted $100 for a new assembly, and the local scrap yard wants $50. Pfft. I'm planning on getting this thing up about 4" and getting some 31's or so, but that's after it's my DD for a while. When I'm ready to drop a few hundred on 2nd hand parts, I'll get them to throw in an assembly and get if fixed correctly.

Change the light bulbs for LEDs.

That's a weird one. I'd look for something that's causing too many amps to get to that bulb. If another bulb on that wire is bigger, for instance. Maybe try replacing both sides, and checking the fuse. Not sure which circuit it's on, but if there's a 25 amp where a 15 should be, it could indicate some mad science-ing had gone on.

Naturally, I'd look at the assembly as well. A bad connection/increased resistance back there will cause heating which could also be the problem.

I can't speak to LED bulbs, but I hear good things.

Good luck.
