Ticking/clicking noise 03 overland

So I just bought an 03 overland with 75k. Drove it from Albuquerque to SoCal then home to Reno, NV. After a few days in Reno I have been noticing a ticking/clicking sound coming from the the engine. I have no stethoscope but I am 90% sure it is coming from the drivers side.

The ticking only happens when my foot is off the gas at idle. If I accelerate moderately or slow down like a normal driver I can hear the ticking start to come back. The ticking gets faster as I accelerate then disappears at around 10-15 mph, the same process happens in reverse when slowing down. Im pretty sure this phenomenon happens when the engine is hot or cold but I dont usually notice the ticking when I start the Jeep since im freezing and not paying attention, pretty sure it happens at any temp.

I did not notice this problem when I was down in Southern California where the night and day temps were ~ 40-68 F, but now in Reno where temps are ~10-40 F I hear the ticks.

Currently I am running 89 octane in the 4.7 ho, I did a full SeaFoam treatment at 1/2 a tank of gas to the vac line, crank case and gas tank. I will also be switching to 91 once I hit empty.

The power steering pulley has a small chip in it but that doesn't seem to be affecting anything. I will replace that with my next oil change.

If theres anything I left out or something that will help you help me please post up! I'd like to get this fixed or at least figure out what it could be. I have read around and I know its not an exhaust leak but thats all I have really been able to figure out.

Thanks!

Lifter tick ?

The Evaporative Purge Solenoid ticks similar to what you describe. The WJ 4.7l engine is an overhead cam design and there are no lifters. The purge solenoid is mounted on the left side (drivers) engine compartment near the ABS pump. If you hold your hand on the solenoid you will feel it tick.

I had a similar issue on my 2006 4.7L V8. It was the drivers side exhaust manifold. I got it replaced, and the issue went away. It was about $600 to have it fixed.

The sound coming from my engine almost sounded like a go cart. It was like you described - a ticking that was there on idle and got louder as I accelerated.

I meant sounds like lifter tick...? But good catch and suggestion I never would have guessed that

The EVAP solenoid is normally not working when the engine is cold and it is a constant clicking, not depending on rpm.
As it is described, i would also lean towards a hydraulic valve lash adjuster.
Did you open the hood and listen from closeby? A mechanics stetoscope would help a lot in finding the exact spot where its coming from.

My Jeep makes ticking almost identical to the OP and this is what it is. At first I thought it might be something bad. But when I actually opened the hood and listened with my ear, it was easy to locate as the evap purge solenoid. I would check that first.

Eventhough checking the EVAP purge solenoid doesn´t cost a think, this solenoid makes a constant ticking, it doesn´t change with rpm. Also the PCM will pulse the solenoid above a certain engine coolant temperature, it will not work on a cold engine.

Yea I discovered the clicking from that solenoid a few days ago.

The clicking happens from 0-10mph, its slower at idle (0 mph or moving) and slightly increases up until about 10 mph when it disappears. Since it disappears at 10 mph which is about 1500 rpms and I can't hear it in any other gear below 1500 rpms Im assuming its the evap solenoid.

The clicking also doesn't happen 100% of the time. Sometimes I stop and can hear it as im slowing down, other times it wont happen at all. Every once in a while it will even start ticking after sitting at a stoplight for a little while ( maybe 5-10 secs)

The EVAP solenoid will tick continuously after the engine has reached a certain temperature. It can be that you won't hear it at a certain speed, due to other noises being louder. There was a TSB for that, to change the way it was mounted, so that the noise transmission to the body gets less. But as far as i know the ticking doesn't change with rpm.

Re: Ticking/clicking noise 03 overland

Hrmm, I guess ill go warm the jeep up til it makes that noise again and try disconecting the solenoid to see if that makes it go away. I will also try accelerating with my finger on the canister to see if actually does change with rpms as I previously mentioned.

Im confounded by this problem since it only happens at low rpm's in 1st and idle. Im 99% sure it doesn't happen in other gears because I have stock intake and exhaust so the cabin is pretty quiet which makes it easy to hear the ticking when it is happening.

I'll get back to you guys later today with what I discover. Thanks again for alll the help fellas!

I should also note I have a superchips tuner and I am running the 91 performance tune. I ran the diagnostics tool yesterday and pulled no error codes...
