Wonder why Jeep does not participate in Dakar Rally

Not sure how many of you follow Dakar rally... but I have been following it for few years now. It is going on right now and today was stage 5.

I always wondered why Jeeps don't participate in them... maybe not as factory team.. but even as other teams using Jeeps. American Robbie Gordon has been running Hummers but has been never completed the race. VWs, Mercedes, BMWs and heck.. even MINIs have been racing in the rally. I don't ever recall seeing Land Rovers recently or Jeeps.

Maybe there is so much dunes out there that Jeep knows that them and sand don't mix. :D Hence they stay out of it? LOL. Personally, I would love to see Jeeps in the race....

Any Dakar Rally fans on the forum here?

Cheers,
-Aiyer

Do you follow online or is it being televised somewhere? I always catch reruns of previous years. Always got a kick out of Dakar. Especially those big ass semi looking rigs.

I'd say either the poor cost to awareness ratio, or the fact that there's not enough gas stations to fill up at along the way :p

The ROI (return on investment) would be very poor. It's being aired on NBC Sports cable and they are probably reaching 500 people with their 30 minute telecast. Jeep does a lot of stuff at the community level with dealer participation that makes far more sense than running in the Dakar

Probably 500 people in the US, but it is very popular outside of US. Just like soccer or MotoGP or Cricket. :)

What I am curious is why are no other teams using Jeeps? Maybe it is the lack of gas stations on the way like Fauee says.. LOL.

MINIs came w/ their ugly countryman last year and have been doing terrific. Actually #1 so far this season.

Do Jeeps run in the Baja race?

I enjoy watching the off-road races. I follow when time permits. :)

I think the ROI for Jeep would be pretty good on running these types of races. It is an off-road brand running in an off-road race. Seems to make sense to me.

Re: Wonder why Jeep does not participate in Dakar Rally

Found this info from a google search. Apparently, in 2012, there was a Jeep Grand Cherokee. But, it failed to finish.

"Mark McMillin
A native of San Diego, the popular U.S.-based McMillin drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee with co-driver Gary Arnold. Unfortunately, the four-time winner of the Baja 1000 watched his Dakar dreams die when the McMillin Racing Dakar team's Jeep suffered a blown head gasket and warped head that forced him to the sidelines during Stage 2, which he could not finish.
This was especially disappointing, given that McMillin said before the start of his first Dakar: "I've been thinking about this race for a long time. Finishing is priority one. For sure, I'd like to win my class (Open Score), but I have no idea of what to expect...at the age of 55, I am coming to see what the Dakar is all about. I hope to do a good job so I can come back."

After the event, he said, "The best part was experiencing it first-hand, as there is no way you can begin to know it from TV or the stories of others. You really can't compare it to the Baja 1000 -- it's a different game. The worst part? The lack of sleep and the dust-bowl bivouacs. But I would absolutely go back under the right circumstances!"

+1, it would be suited to Jeep.

Stuttgart cut their teeth with Dakar to get the Touareg/Cayenne worthy of OR duties. My old 2006 Touareg had tremendous trail capabilities, alas it has since grown softer in recent iterations.
