Friend needs help with his WJ

ok i got a buddy with the 4.7 WJ... it has problems...

when he starts it, sometimes it starts up, other times he has to pump the gas to keep it at around 1,000 rpm or it shuts off. Then after a sec he can let it go back to idle and run...

then he can shift it into reverse, back out of his spot, but as soon as he puts it in drive, it shifts, then dies.

Any ideas?

Could be a bad TPS or IAC, but another possibility may be a bad battery, these things do some pretty crazy things when the voltage is too low.

Try first doing the simple and inexpensive change of spark plugs! Could be not firing a cyl....

Don't take it to a stealership....If your saying that he JUST changed the spark plugs that is probably the reason for the rough idle and not running. If you do not clean and insert the plugs correctly and place the coil packs back on securely one or more cyl will not fire and will run exactly how you are describing. Take them out again, clean them and the holes they go in and reinsert, then snuggle put the coil packs back on and secure it down. Reconnect battery and try again!

Try cycling the ignition switch on/off 3 times and see what (if any) codes come up in the odometer.

Bent fuel lines or bad fuel pump, just a wild shot, get it tested maybe.
