2014 Grand Cherokee Dinghy Towing (Blue Ox)

I will be using my 2014 Grand Cherokee as a dinghy behind my motorhome.
I plan to use a Blue Ox Tow bar. Currently, as I start this thread, it is not known, by the manufacturer, if the original WK2 baseplate(BX1128) will work on a 2014 GC.

The current base plate works on all Wk2('11,'12,'13) GC's including the SRT.

My guess is, it will work. If not, I may have to drive to the Blue Ox Factory to have them design a new one, if no one else has done this.

I know in previous WK2's the only GC's that can be towed, un-modified, are the ones with QUADRA-TRAC IIŽ and QUADRA-DRIVEŽ II 4WD Systems. (They need a 4WD transfer case with a neutral position.) For further information see MotorHome Magazine's 2012 Guide. With the new transmission and shifting lever in the 2014 the towing procedure may vary slightly.

If my new GC diesel arrives shortly before my summer trip begins, I will have very little time to get the base plate and Air Force One Braking Control installed. I need to have my ducks i a row when the new vehicle arrives.

If anyone has any information regarding any of this please post it.

Thank you.

I found out two things anyway; the WK2 Grand Cherokees have no steering wheel Locks and the procedure for switching the transfer case to Neutral has changed slightly for the 2014. Most cars you must keep a key in the ignition. No key is great.

What is the vehicle weight of a Diesel? I tow my 2012 v6 without problem and it comes in at 5K. Figure a diesel will weigh more then that.

That's a good question. You're right the Diesel does weigh more than the V6. For me the weight difference is non consequential because of the weight of my motorhome. I don't think the weight will vary enough to make a difference; the curb weights published for the 2013 diesel sold overseas were about 400 pounds heavier than the american 2013 V6's. Because of various options and skid plates, Rims, and so forth there is a wide range of curb weights for the Grand Cherokee. When I load a vehicle, if I feel I am getting close to the upper limits, I actually go and weigh my car loaded. I think it is safe to say all stock 2014 GC's will have curb weights (unloaded with no driver) in the range of 4,500 to 5,500 pounds.

Shouldn't it be the other way 'round? Use your Jeep to tow the motorhome...

Lots of reasons to have two engines available on a long trip and if you have a big class A then a quick trip to the grocery store can be a hassle without a tag along...

Don't know if you have the Tow Bar or not, but probably a 10K would be in order. I have a 6K and pull my JGC weighing 5K. Like to have a little more towbar than vehicle. My MH runs about 24-25K loaded for a trip. Try not to use the JGC as a trailer, but it has been known to happen.

I plan on going with a 7,500 lb "Aladdin Tow Bar". It is light and exceeds the GVWR by 1,000 lbs. My motorhome is 50,000 lbs loaded. I am not committed to the tow bar if you have any specific suggestions. I am partial to BlueOx though.

I am partial to Roadmaster, so I would probably go with this one -
Roadmaster Inc. - Tow Bars, Braking Systems & RV Accessories 10K and has the non-binding mechanism on it - think that BlueOx has similar.

Right now, I'm thinking the tow bar I'll buy will be one that is available for the 2014. With any luck it will be the same as the 2013
.

I have a new JGC 2014 Limited that can be towed 4 down. I will be towing it with Sunseeker 3010ds Coach. It weighs 13500 lbs fully loaded. I will weigh the Jeep soon but I have the V6. So I assuming it is below 5000 lbs. My GCWR is 22000 lbs and my hitch is rated for 5000 lbs.

Anyway, any thoughts on this setup? What supplemental braking are any of you using with your Jeep? Towbar, baseplate, paint protection?

Does any one have any thoughts about using the air lift Versions for a toad ?
