Traction Control/ Gears wont engage!

I've had my Jeep since 06, love my WK! First issue ever! Looking for help from my fellow Jeep owners! It's a 06 3.7 AWD WK.
Not sure if this had anything to do with it, but I pulled out of my house and drove 200ft or so, went over a speed bump and it disengaged the gears. No codes are thrown, no bad noises or smells. I pushed it into a parking spot. Had a mechanic look at it, thinking it was the drive train. Drive train is fine, no issue there! Felt better about that but he doesn't do electrical, hmmm some mechanic. Trying to fix this on my own, due to funds. I'm sure we can all relate. Fire Fighter pay isn't all that great.
I can jack up the front Right tire, crank the Jeep put it in reverse and it spins. Than i'll go to the other side, jack up the Left side, put it in revers and it spins. Let it down, TURN OFF traction control and the Jeep drives, like normal but the moment i hit a speed bump it disengages the gears again! I have replaced both Front Right and Left speed sensors. Not fixed....now im stumped!

I'm not sure what you mean by disengaging the gears.

Do you mean the transmission goes into neutral, or the transmission is in gear but the power is not getting to the wheels?

First thing I would do is check fluid levels all around (transmission, transfer case, axles).

I do not believe a wheel speed sensor is likely to cause your specific symptoms.

Next, thing I I would check is to make sure that the tranmission selector switch on the side of the tranny is properly engaging.

If it is determined that the transmission is going into gear properly, I would check the transfer case. Which transfer case do you have? If you have a low range, does that still function?

Although your mechanic checked the powertrain, it really sounds like more of a mechanical condition than an electrical one...imo.

Low tranny fluid
go check it out

Yep, I agee, start with checking your transmission fluid level!

Sounds like your tranny or maybe your transfer case.

Problem found (we think). I have replaced fluids. I have changed all speed sensors. Had a mechanic come and look at gears, told me it had nothing to do with the drive train! Problem continued, finally got tired of spending money on nothing! The shop I have taken it to has called and told me it was a problem in the front wheel? Than has called back to tell me that they are having to order a "longer front axel shaft" and wont take longer than 3 hours to fix. Stay tuned. Not sure what could have caused all the issues but i will soon find out.

wtf??? so how did it operate without said longer shaft for 7 years? sounds fishy to me and why wouldnt the rears just have driven the vehicle regardless of what the front axle was doing? did u go to a jeep dealer or just a mechanic?

Dealer was convinced that it was my transmission. I can get it to drive until I hit a bump and than it disengages the gears. Dealer said they wanted to rebuked the transmission, so I told them that they were never touching my jeep again. I was at work when they called and I'm going this morning to ask why the longer axel shaft? This a simple mechanic shop that we have been bringing our Fire Engines to. So we'll see. I'm not paying but for 3 hrs of work and an axel shaft. But what in the wheel would make it disengage the gears?

Very curious of outcome

When the truck won't move have you ever noticed if the gear selector letters in the dash have boxes around all the letters? [P][R][N][D][L]?

2005JGC 03-26-2013 02:46 PM

You have an open center differential (in the transfer case). If any path to the street is broken the jeep will not move. Period. Sounds like they find the axle disengaged from the differential for whatever reason.

Re: Traction Control/ Gears wont engage!

kennzz05: The jeep gave me no sign of any issues. Nothing in the dash, no smells or codes. I had nothing to go on other than it wouldn't take a gear.

So I finally have my jeep back, thank God. My wife surprised me with paying for it and obtaining the keys while I was at work. Love my wife. I wasn't able to make it there this morning b/c of work. They called me this afternoon to let me know it was ready. They ordered the wrong axle shaft in the beginning. So this thing really had me stumped as what it could be. The outcome:
1 CV Axle Shaft Assembly 123.96$ (left side)
Front End Alignment 49.95
3 Hrs of labor. 275.00

I can only assume its what 2005JGC said. I have yet to talk to the mechanic due to the wife getting it. But it runs like a champ. I'm glad shes home. Back on shift Thursday and so i'll make a run by and thank them personally and talk to the mechanic. Not sure what caused this or how to avoid it. Ill keep everyone updated. But if this ever happens to myself or anyone on here again, we'll know. Thanks to everyone for their help, I appreciate everyone on here.
