Trouble Codes??

Do trouble codes store date and times they occurred? I have an incident where a body shop fixed a paint issue, but when picking up the vehicle the rear parking system has failed. They removed the rear bumper in the process, but are claiming they did not cause the parking system to fail. The dealer told me the codes do not store date and time, which would allow me to show the body shop they started after they repaired my car. Just wondering if anyone knew if the dealer was accurate?

I did see online where Detroit diesel engines store odometer readings on events like crashes, so I am wondering if the same is recorder for standard faults.

Re: Trouble Codes??

Some codes cause "freeze-frame" data to be stored to aid in troubleshooting. This includes things like the vehicle speed, engine load, and various sensor readouts. The date and time are not stored in this way.

I would speak to the owner and/or manager of the shop that completed the repair. It could be something as simple as them not plugging back in the wiring harness, but they should fix their mistake. Period.

What were the codes?

Re: Trouble Codes??

The dealer did not give me the codes, only that they were not able to determine if it was caused before or during the repair, which I can understand. The dealer just said it needed (1) parking sensor and a wiring harness as the wires were pulled.

The body shop however says it had nothing to do with the repair and they checked all of the connections. They are basically saying it was caused prior to them having the vehicle, but I have never had an issue and I believe when they removed the bumper they caused the damage. I even had a picture the week it was dropped off showing the dash and no warnings, but they could have cared less.

If you have a program like Torque, you can list all trouble codes and readings and e-mail to yourself before you take it in. Then you would have a timestamped "before".

When I was rearended, my tablet GPS had the record of exactly when (to the second) it happened and location. Could even see how far I was pushed and that I was stopped. Modern times.
