2014 1st gear ratio? Sorry...tried searcing

Hi All,

Anxiously waiting for pricing to re-open so I can order a 2014 Overland. Started to get pricing from a few dealers, but apparently it's been pulled for now. Hopefully the second week of February like someone else here posted.

Anyway...does anyone know what the gearing for the 2014 will be? I haven't been able to find it published anywhere. specifically interested in first gear. That's the main reason i'm waiting for the 2014. That and the new indigo interior.

Looking forward to joining the community!

Andrew

Thank you SMG.

that's a much more appealing 1st gear ratio! Should be less of a dog off the line i'm sure.

Thanks again,

Andrew

But I bet to save fuel, it will normally start out in 2nd gear, unless in sport/manual mode or with heavy throttle application from a stop.

Really? That would be weird, wouldn't it?

I'm interested in seeing how the Eco button ends up working. I think it's standard across all trims and engine options, isn't it?

A lot of people who have the 2011-2013 say the transmission, etc., is clearly tuned for fuel economy at the expense of a pleasant and "fun" driving experience. I'm hoping that most of that stuff that was enabled by default on the 11-13 is "hidden" behind the Eco Mode for the 2014. :) (The 8 speed should improve things regardless though.)

Here's what the manual states about the eco mode:

Quote:

When the Fuel Economy (ECO) Mode is engaged, the vehicle control systems will change the following:

• The transmission will upshift sooner and downshift later.
• The torque converter clutch may engage at lower engine speeds and remain on longer.
• The engine idle speed will be lower.
• The overall driving performance will be more conservative.
• Some ECO mode functions may be temporarily inhib-ited based on temperature and other factors

I suspect that 4+ 1st gear is more for going up the side of a cliff, towing heavy loads, and parades. In fact would bet that on the flat it is faster starting in second than first. With a heavy flywheel, the engine will not be able to wind fast enough for that low a gear.

You'd know better than I would. But with all of the negative comments -- not just from regular people on forums such as these but also reviewers in magazines and sites like ConsumerReports, etc. -- about the tall gearing and resulting slow acceleration from a start on the 2011-2013, I would be surprised if the 2014 would start in an even taller gear (2nd gear ratio on the 2014 is 3.143; 1st gear ratio on the 2011-2013 is 3.59).

Yes however the axle ratio is lower for the V6 in '14 so a second gear start is very close (10.8 vs 11.1) to the same. Also don't forget the torque converter which might be looser for the V-6.

Looks like 1st will top out at about 38 for the V6 so may be useful for a full throttle start, depending on what the "traction control" allows.

Amazing part to me is the 3.09 axle for the Hemi. With a .67 top that will be turning less than 1400 rpm at 60 mph and barely 1600 at 70. I really want to see some torque curves.

ps I have never felt my V-6 was slow, can get to improper speeds all to easily.
