JGC CRD vs. VW Touareg TDI

I'm considering both (CRD & TDI) and wondered what other folks think -- especially those who shopped both before buying.

General thoughts (rambling):

From a price for features standpoint (using the prelim pricing), the JGC Limited and Overland models look to be priced under their only competitors (VW Sport, Sport w/Nav, and Lux vs the the Limited, Limited Lux, and the Overland.)

Major features are similar, but the JGC is a little larger and the VW has adaptive HIDs (Sweet) and refined interiors.

I can also get the TDI now. A 2012 (at a small discount) or a 2013 very near invoice.

JGC is assembled in the USA and the Toareg in Europe (not Germany BTW). Maybe this shouldn't be a factor, but for someone who has served for 26 years it is -- but only to a point if quality (my biggest concern) is an issue.

Diesel vs. Petrol is not a factor, I'm going with a Diesel!

Re: JGC CRD vs. VW Touareg TDI

The Touareg is fantastic, it rides much more like a car on the roads but lacks that ruggedness that the Jeep has. The TDI engine is better in every way based on the numbers alone.

The reason I ended up with the Jeep was features that didn't exist on the US Touaregs (cooled seats). That and I liked the more truck like ride of the Jeep. Had I been looking at anything less than an Overland model, I'd have bought the Touareg. It's a little more money but IMO its nicer looking (certainly a LOT nicer than the 14s will be), the whole package is a little more refined, and they really thought of a lot of neat things (the power liftgate is height programmable for instance). Touaregs have mega residuals too, especially as a TDI. So that small difference in price for the T-reg you get back in residuals.

If cooled seats aren't a priority for you, it's an easy choice.

Appreciate the response.

I'm coming from an older X3, the Touareg handles very well and torque is phenomenal. Subjectively, its' engine performed as well as the Hemi 5.7 Overland (2012 model). Much better on hills. The transmission felt "better" on the TDI though and that was probably the difference.

The interior of the Touareg was of very high quality fit and finish wise, but there were only two choices of color (same as a JGC Limited). The overland had very nice seats and more variety in selection color wise, but the plastic in some places (especially the cargo area) seemed of lesser quality/refinement (not junk though).

I actually like the exterior looks of both trucks about the same, but the gadgetry level (like the ventilated seats and adaptive cruise control) on the Jeep really caught my eye. Its also a jeep..

Owned two jeeps before the X3 (a maxed out wrangler '94 and a Liberty Limited). Both were fun to drive and own (but leaked oil), and got awful MPGs.

The family is getting older/bigger and the X3 is maxed out cargo-wise even for a weekend get-away. I don't do much off roaring and I'm not in any hurry to buy.

I'm in the same situation. Hope that competition will develop between the JGC CRD and the Treg TDI and will result in occasional price wars for the diesel market and "conquest" rebates from both companies.

I am leaning slightly to the JGC CRD (Limited model) for a few reasons. These may not be important to others.

* Towing an Airstream trailer. The current TDI actually has a great reputation in the Airstream community as the The Little Engine that Could. Slight advantage, I think, to the new JCC here with its 1" longer wheelbase, more thorough Towing Group package including brake controller wiring, and available Quadra-Lift air suspension.

* More cargo room/length behind the 2nd row seats. The Treg cabin is surprisingly short here! Not an issue for some people...but it is for me. Not so good for owners who want to put dogs, camping equipment, etc. in the back. As an unreformed ski bum and backcountry skier, I still sometimes do road trips with my daughter where we pull into the ski mountain parking lot or Forest Service trailhead well after midnight and pull out our Marmot sleeping bags for a short night's sleep in the back of the JGC Overland. Not as easy to do in a Treg.

* QuadraDrive II drive system in the top JGC models. I have the QuadraDrive I system in my 2002 Overland and it is a VERY capable, safe traction system in the worst wet/snow/ice road conditions. I have heard that the Treg system is good, but I KNOW the QuadraDrive system has saved my A*s more than a few times.

The only thing that gives me pause. How well will Jeep/Chrysler service departments support the CRD? Will Jeep/Chrysler sell me a LifeTime MaxCare warranty for the CRD? (If not, as is the case today, what do they know that gives them pause!?)

Well said ironroot, waiting to see crd in person also looked at touareg myself, thought it was quite high in price compared to overland with all bells and whistles. I would like to have it for mileage purposes, not really towing anything, otherwise will look into the improved 6cyl, good luck with your choice. by the way also agree with warranty and the techs at jeep

These two points are ones I'd not really considered. Will the back seats lie flat enough on the '14s to actually sleep there? The X3 is almost long enough but the angle of the seats gets pretty brutal.

I'd thought to get an extended warranty -- one "came with" our VW Golf :); and, the three years of free maintenance went a long way easing my mind on a brand that has a reputation for being unreliable. No issues in over two years and almost 40K miles.

Good food-for-thought post.

If the TDI has a Ski Pass-through in the back seat -- it is a very useful feature on shorter trips.

If VW brought back the Fire Breathing V10 Diesel I would say T-reg

THAT thing was a BEAST

Yes, the 2014 JGC seats fold perfectly flat. I went to the Detroit Auto Show a few days ago and I was predicting I would freak out a few of the Jeep show floor staff when I pulled out a measuring tape, flipped down the rear seats and began measuring flat floor, rear cargo dimensions in their nice JGC Limited . :)

I'm 6' 0" tall and there is as much room (maybe even an inch or two more because of the 2014 fold-down configuration) in the rear of the 2014 JGC for an overnight "bivouac" as there is in my 2002 JGC.

Actually, the Detroit Auto Show staff were good natured about my investigation. After all, this vehicle is supposed to attract a backcountry crowd and not be used just for runs to the mall!

Re: JGC CRD vs. VW Touareg TDI

I don't think I'd really consider the back of the Jeep sleepable. I'm 6'1.5 and its a little sport for me and the gf(5'9) to sleep in the back. I'd have to sleep diagonally, which would lead to incessant nagging, which would lead to me just getting a hotel room.

If size/space in the back is a concern, they're going to come out with a Grand Wagoneer, there's also the Durango (same as the GC but longer), and of course the Q7 and GL350 to look at.

sorry and no bias here...but to me....pics speak louder than words
VW interior....LOL. Does anyone else think this looks like a 1990s interior? Barf! Fake looking wood...looks plastic. the dash is horribly 90s looking.
http://www.autoweek.com/galleryimage...g-interior.jpg
exterior-----SNORE BORING! The headlights look ok...but all those vertical slats....again looks 90's to me
http://imageonthefly.autodatadirect....434&HEIGHT=326

again...never driven one....but for $54k....I want something that atleast paases the eye test for 2014.

Re: JGC CRD vs. VW Touareg TDI

The interior of the VW is classy and modern. It's got that very understated Germanic design, I really like it. Same for the exterior, it's much more subdued and refined IMO. It doesn't scream at you, which I really like.

The Jeep on the other hand begs for attention. The interior just doesn't look as nice either.

It is however funny that you find a design that's all new and very modern to look 90s, but a vehicle that borrows heavy from a 90s vehicle (WJ) doesn't.

But it's all about personal preferences I suppose.

Re: JGC CRD vs. VW Touareg TDI

exactly...MY OPINION! The VW is awful IMHO. You post yours and Ill post mine. Take it for what its worth. Like you saids...its all personal. The GC interior is an award winning interior....top 10 in the world in fact. The VW could be....but I dont remmeber it being mentioned. I would also guess the GC diesel will outsell the VW TDI...thats just an opinion though.
