So I got sick of the bulky plastic bottom, and its tray, along with the light colored carpet showing every little bit of dirt. I took it out, made a dew measurements, and made myself a custom insert. I think the sub sounds much better reflecting off of it, a few more inches of clearance in that back area as in parts the piece is decently thick, and lost 15 lbs overall for weight freaks. Easy mod if anyone else is interested. I'll get some pics up in the next few days when I'm back on my feet.
The only two things that would bug me about that is; not being able to fold the seats down and have a flat plane to put cargo on, and (when the seats are upright) still having the holes (or caves) on each side of the false floor.
And I'm not sure you'd even be able to fit 10 woofers in that space (not diameter wise, or airspace wise).
I would build out the floor to cover the entire area... there wouldn't be the holes on either side, and I never carry cargo so big that I need to have the entire rear space. If I did, I would build this thing so that I could remove it if need be.
There is also plenty of room for my two 12's to be built there. The pics, and my awful drawings, make it look like there isn't enough room. I took one out of my current box, and kind of held it in the position it would be for a really simple "mock up", and it'd fit. I'd put one in the back corner, and then another in the front corner. Lemme draw another crappy pic in paint real quick lol.
Anyway, that is bascially what it'd look like from the top. So all you'd see looking in is the two subs on the left, and then the floor on the right. Might go buy some cheap plywood this weekend and try to mock something up.
If I ever had a need for my cargo area, I wouldn't even have my subs back there. The main reason I would do this is so that I can have my spare with me at all times, and keep my subs. By building the floor over the tire, I'll actually have more cargo space (or floor area) to put stuff like suitcases and stuff than my current set up with just the box and 2 12's in it.
Thats what I did to my cargo area, except I built a false floor to hide my amps and extra stuff like tools and jumper cables. I just built a frame for the false foor to sit on. I did a thread on here about it.
I def dont like that idea of having the spare in the cargo area of the WK, that just looks silly with the floor up so high. But if it works for someone else, do it. Just make sure to save the stock cargo floor for when you get rid of the vehicle. lol. I did to put back in mine.
I don't know if anyone knows but the WJ had more volume than the WK does.. I think it lost close to four cubic feet... all because of the elevated cargo floor and locating the spare under the Jeep instead of a trap door. For the WK2 the spare goes back into a trap door
Frank, I doubt it's a feasible option to exercise, but would it be out of the question (or even possible) to have a shop bore out some of the area under the Jeep to fit the new tire?
Your mod looks good, but does look like a lot of work.
I'm not sure what your tire size is so this may be a moot point.
I know you look into the bolt cutting & hitch grinding.
Here is a write-up by another on that mod from another forum that may convince you to try it. http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?t=516836
If it does not work out you could always do the cargo mod with nothing lost.
yea, your tires are 32.1" mine are 31.6
For sure that 1/2" will make a big difference.
I know it sucks having the spare eat up all the cargo space. I had that problem with my WJ.
I noticed the new 2011 WK2 is going to compact spare, wonder if that means smaller width only or smaller diameter also. I have "heard" we can drive our WK's short distances on smaller diameter tire.
Well, my srt exhaust is on so putting the spare back is not an idea. Lol. I dont go on trails and im never more than 100 miles from home, so if I get a flat its triple A towed to my parents house where my stock tires are stored to put back on.
