Why do 4x4 Jeeps have no option for part time 2wd?

Or do they and I've never noticed on my WK2? My older GC gave me the option and I was curious as to why they abandoned the feature. Being that 98% of the time I don't need 4wd it seems like overkill. It seems that gas mileage would improve. Any insight?

Get a jeep with select trac and you get that option...

Oh god. Lol. I have that already! Is it the sport mode? I thought that just disabled traction control?

Selec-Trac might allow you to switch to 2WD mode, but I think you might be confusing it with Selec-Terrain, which has a sport mode which gives it a rear bias (80% rear) but it's still 4WD.

Yup, selec trac was the bomb back in the day. 2WD , unless you needed 4WD and then you could have fulltime 4WD ( all surfaces, all the time) or PartTime 4WD ("locked" 4WD) and then 4LO too.

But these days I'm guessing marketing a full time 4WD is more important.

As for a mechanical.... I think the selec trac system moved all the time, but just wasn't engaged until you pulled the lever. So if you have the parts moving anyway....might as well make it full time 4WD.

I still have an 01 Cherokee with selec trac. If you would like to buy this "Limited" and classic Jeep....$200,000 please (discount for JeepGarage members)

Man I loved that Selec-Trac. I had it on my ZJ. In 2wd with a locker in the rear, it was like pushing a grocery cart backwards!

Is that an option on a WK2?

I had a 99 WJ. That was the Grand Ch. right? It had select trac and it was a beast. 2WD most blacktop time, No Traction control to kill power and try to kill me at intersections, and lo range i could use to pull a boat up a soft sand beach. Miss it. but on the other hand....the WK2 rides like a dream and manages pretty well it the snow too:)

I miss my '97 Limited with the inline 6. Had well over 200k and was still solid as could be.
