Potential purchase questions 2013 model

Hey all;

Been roaming around the various forums recently as I am trying to get some info on the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokees as my wife is contemplating trading in her current ride and the GC is high up on the list as a potential. Myself I am a avid forums reader/ poster and happy modder, cars, not trucks atm.... Having gleaned a lot information from the sites which helped learn about my current car and actually helped me get the best possible deals I could, I am going to get the same information I can on these vehicles to help her get the best possible price period.

That being said, I will give the list of things that are must haves for her and go from there.

Must haves

1) Heated seats
2) defrosting mirrors
3) Must have 4WD not awd.
4) 5.7 Hemi

I know it is a pretty short list and virtually anything with leather seats would fit the bill. One of the things I have noticed is there are a lot of models, IE:Laredo (X), Limited, Altitude, SUmmit, Overland, and of course SRT (no explanation needed there....:P)

What the vehicle will be is a daily driver, weekend grocery getter, Weekend Beach driver.... There is a beach we can drive on during the summer which she enjoys when we get the chance. The daily commute is about 9 miles one way and about 18 stop lights. I had a 2012 Dodge Charger which we used to travel to vacation and she loved the ride, the radio (Sat radio with 8.4 screen) and the mileage I got down and back on the 450 mile trip. I realize this is not a car and will not drive the same, (Owned several SUV/ P'Up trucks over the years) so she is comfortable with the abilities and shortcomings of the 5.7 Hemi.

My questions are which model would be good enough for her, She does not need the top of the line nor does she want it. What she does want is the most bang for her buck. Also the most the will pay tax title tags is 36k I realize this opens the door to most anything and all, and I can say both her and I are not interested in the 2014 ATM due to the fact they are introducing new things like the 8 speed.....

Is there a specific options package we should be looking for along with certain things to avoid at all costs to get in the window she wants to be in for a price? She also has a trade which is about 7-10k in value Color wise no red, no yellow, no black. She also does not want a black interior. Are there any goodies we should ask to be installed, or included on the price as well before signing on the dotted line as well?

One vehicle we have seen is a 5.7 Laredo MSRP 42,875 (internet discount 5880) with final price of 36995. I have not inquired about this or anything beyond a web search. One of the things I have been told about Jeeps is the price is what it is, which from reading these forums the past couple days I am happy to find out it is not the case. As I am one of those people who will go to 10 different dealers to get the best possible price and the most bang for my buck...

Thanks in advance for any information and hopefully a more defined choice of what we should focus on trying to purchase.

4WD (Quadratrac II) is standard with the 5.7L Hemi. Last I checked, Jeep was offering a $1500 "power bonus" for selecting the Hemi, which is a great deal.

For what you're looking for a Laredo X with the Hemi would be the perfect fit, though you'll want to make sure it has the 430N navigation system (if you want navi)....navi is optional on Laredo X.

Thanks for the response, While the tech toys are nice, she does not need them, though if it is part of a package, she will take it.

WK2Jeeps.com - 2011-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee menu

has a complete description of what features come in what models and what are in the option packages, kinda like a shopping list. Also provided are the MSRP and invoice prices to give you an idea of dealer wiggle room. Dealers also get a hold back if they are good boys, so there is a bit of profit there even at invoice. Join tread lightly and get the friends and family price of 1% under invoice. With a lot of work you may be able to do better, but it does save a lot of time.

2013s are out of production, so what you find on the lots are it. The 2014 with its 8 speed transmission are being built at this time, you may want to look at the 2104 as it should run a bit better, if you can believe the RAM forums.

So since you're not looking for top of the line I'm guessing we can eliminate the SRT/Summit/Overlands.

The Laredo you listed is nice but you're at Limited prices at that point. It's personal preference of course but the Limited does get the HID's, panoroof, memory seats and a bunch of other stuff that are either optional or not available on the Laredo's. The altitude is basically just a Laredo with an appearance pkg.

And I'm not just saying the Limited is awesome because I own one.....ok maybe I'm a teeny bit biased.....but just a little! :)

Either way the Limited or Laredo should be perfect for the wife. Happy hunting! :)

Sounds like the Laredo X is perfect...

Re: Potential purchase questions 2013 model

Thanks for the responses so far. We took a look at several GC today which included several 3.6models, a couple 5.7 Laredo and Limited, a few overland and one SRT. Immediately she was drawn to the SRT model. Too funny imo.... We saw the interiors of the Laredo and Limited and the limiteds had woodgrain at this lot. One thing she did comment on was how plain the wheels looked on the Laredo. Myself, I like the wheels which come on the Nav equipped vehicles. She is okay with a Limited or a Laredo. They also had a Trailhawk there in Silver which she liked as well, but the MSRP was close to 50k.

Now, the fun part shall begin. Sending out E-mails to figure out which dealerships will deal and which are full of BS. From what I have seen so far, most vehicles which she would be interested in are in the 40-43k range before any incentives/ discounts or haggling begins. This is not including the trailhawk, while nice, I am not too sure any dealership will discount that to prices which she wants to be at out the door which is 36k. I think she can hit 36k before we add in her trade.

Discounts/ incentives currently are 1500 for a v8, 500 consumer cash and another 500. Am I correct in that 2500 total in incentives? I have seen several vehicles with dealer discounts up to 6k and I am pretty confident they are including every potential discount someone can get and even those which someone cannot get as being included as part of that 6k and once we get there it will be MSRP minus 2500 for the previously mentioned incentives.

So, realistically what can someone expect to pay for a 40-43k MSRP vehicle.... or better yet, what should be my price range for a out the door price including incentives and haggling, but not taking into account her trade in.

I have read a few threads which say price should be around 34-36k..... thoughts?

I'd say $34-36k is about right. At the end of Dec I picked up a $41,9xx sticker for $34,9xx with very little haggling. The deal was too good for me to pass up, even with the 2014 right around the corner. And I'm loving it so far.

Re: Potential purchase questions 2013 model

The dealer incentive is the ~$3000 from Jeep and the ~$3000 the dealer takes off the MSRP. It is not $6000 off of invoice :) You will often see lower internet pricing but they typically include something like $5000 in trade allowance somewhere in the fine print. It makes it looks like you are getting $11000 off where in fact its an above invoice price.

I found better deals initially visiting dealers in person than shopping via emails. Oh and you will find them much more willing to discount toward the end of February, although that gets you into the classic presidents day buying frenzy....

I would have to agree with you mostly that it is better to go in person, though imo, dropping a few e-mails will hopefully weed out those who are totally unwilling to deal or accept other than a set price. Pretty much those who I am already on the fence about. It helps that Jeep is part of Chrysler now and most of them sell Dodge vehicles so, I kind of have a idea who the dealership is that we will ultimately buy from. Unfortunately one of the dealerships who has the color vehicle and options with the best prices is one who I flat out refuse to do business with.

However, I would be interested in knowing how much off the MSRP I can look forward to getting as a Max goal. It will help me to set sights on a particular MSRP price and or set of options. Since as stated before the trade is involved, I want to get to 36k as a max. Waiting till the last week of the month might be worthwhile overall and I had thought about that a bit.

The one thing I like on the 14's is the 8.4 screen, That was a nice setup on my charger with the Nav unit.... a very nice feature. Is there a model which has tilt in reverse mirrors? Or was that just a charger thing?

Re: Potential purchase questions 2013 model

Limited, Overland, and Summit have tilt in reverse mirrors. Although I've never turned mine on. The Laredo X might too...hopefully someone who knows will post in this thread.

jdchamp31 02-02-2013 07:46 PM

You need to have seat memory to get the tilting mirrors. You can't get Seat Memory in a Laredo or a Laredo X. Only Limited and up. Hope that helps!
