Roof Rack - Urban OffRoad US

10 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys,

I understand this is quite a long post, but please read through if you're seriously interested!

As some of you may be aware, Urban Offroad US manufacture a full rack that replaces the rails completely.

Benefits that I can see:

A - Looks good (follows the roof line)
B - Height (increases the vehicle height by 4.75" - my current Prorack crossbars increase it by around 4" so imagine if I bought a "rack" to add ontop - I don't think I would get in any Underground Car parks / Garage so I'd have to keep taking it off when not in use)
C - Designed to use existing vehicle mounts
D - Integrates well with the vehicle (aerial, tailgate etc all function fine)

Drawbacks:
A - Shipping Costs!
B - Weight due to Steel, not alloy (can also be seen as a benefit as it will be sturdy!!)

There is already a couple of lucky (cashed up??!!) Aussies that have purchased these individually and had them shipped to the closest Port. Unfortunately this does bring the price at close to double the original cost.

I really like the design of this rack and have been wanting to purchase it for close to 6months now, but the cost is a major factor for me. I cannot justify spending $700 on shipping alone!

I have approached Urban Offroad and suggested they contact an Australian 4x4 company to either re-sell, or license and manufacture the design locally.

These are the companies I have suggested:
- ARB - www.Arb.com.au
- TJM - www.tjm.com.au
- Opposite Lock - www.oppositelock.com.au

If anyone can suggest others, please post them here as I will be sending this link to Urban Offroad so they can gauge interest overseas.

Urban Offroad have offered a "Group Buy" for these racks as per the following:

2 racks to the same port for $1400 each
or
3 racks to the same port for $1250 each
or
4 racks to the same port for $1100 each

My only concern here is the fact that to avoid the GST and Australian Import duties, the cost of the goods have to be below $1000. Believe it or not, that $1000 is for the price of the goods and DOES NOT include the shipping fee. Therefore if I was to purchase one individually, I would not get stung with GST or Customs Duties - but it would cost me $1550!

So, here's my proposal:

Please can everyone who is interested post on this thread showing what they would be prepared to pay for one of these racks delivered to their closest port? I am hoping Urban Offroad do us a "group buy" that can be shipped individually as to avoid the GST and Import duties!

I will start off and put down $1200 MAX.

I am also deep down hoping they find an Australian re-seller / manufacturer!

Oh and one last thing - I've left this late as I would like the rack delivered by the first week in June at the very latest!!

Pictures here - Note: This Rack DOES NOT come with the lights!!

I'm not a fan of roof racks because of the drag and stability issues but if I had to have one, this is the one I'd go for. I hope it is well rust-proofed. In the mean time, I'm going the trailer route.

I have always liked GOBI's Stealth racks... They need to stop fooling around and get one ready for the WK2.....

That looks about as functional as a few roof bars IMHO.

The 'basket' base would only be good for an oztent or surfboards. Forget putting a chainsaw or gas bottle anywhere, it'd fall through and hit the roof.

I do agree that it looks like the duck nuts, but with some additional flooring it'd be perfect.

Looks good but no good for me as I have an overland with the pano sun roof. Don't think I would be able open/vent the sunroof with that style

Thanks Kev. It looks awesome but I only use the racks once or twice a year and can't justify that kind of money. I think I got the Thule wing bars and a rhino basket for maybe $450

Hey Kev.

Unfortunately I'm in the same boat as others and as much as I would love to get one of these racks I am just not financial enough to commit. Sorry but thanks for your efforts. I hope you manage to get one at the right price.

Cheers,

Clarkey.

Looks great, I also like Rocky Road Outfitters Safari style rack.

EDIT: Just checked Rockys shipping cost, it would be cheaper to fly to the USA and bring it back on the plane yourself.
Might have to wait till I take the kids to Disneyland before I buy one.
