Coolant leak???

I changed the oil in my 05 GC WK 4.7L (120K miles) today and found some coolant in the skid plate and some on the cross member right below the front passengers side of the engine. I have been getting a whine a start up with the cold weather here in the Northeast and a coolant odor in the cabin at start up for a couple of seconds then it goes away. The water pump was replaced at 75K miles and I did a flush and change at 100K miles with the correct OEM coolant. Any thoughts? Water pump? Thermostat? Hose?

The whine is likely unrelated, and a result of the powersteering pump starting up in the cold weather.

As to the leak, are your noticing the coolant level dropping in the resevoir? Any changes in the operating temperature once warmed up?

Apart from that, I think you'll have to get a good look under there and see if you can see where the fluid is coming from.

Re: Coolant leak???

I have only started to smell the coolant for the last week or so and don't think it has been leaking that long. I keep the reservoir in the middle of the two lines and it was down to the bottom line. Filled it to the top line and will be checking it daily to see what the lose is. We use it vehicle daily but only local driving so it rarely gets up to normal operating temps. I'm going to drive it to work for a couple of days and see what happens with the temps.

As I am sure you understand, It is impossible to tell you what the problem is beyond helpful suggestions. That said, look around your radiator cap, caps can fail in a way that they allow coolant to vent externally, no go.

could be thermostat housing, lower radiator hose, radiator, I have seen my overflow hose where it goes into the nipple on the radiator leak, resolved by cutting the last 1" off the hose and reinstalling it.

After finally getting the time to crawl around, the leak is coming from the thermostat housing. Do I need to replace the thermostat, gasket and housing??

Re: Coolant leak???

Kinda doubtful that the housing is leaking, but you should be able to tell with a careful inspection once you remove it to replace the thermostat and gasket, which should be routine along with a coolant flush and fill.
