I have removed both driver and passenger headlight assembly's on my 2011 limited.

The HID on the driver side quite working, took it to the dealership and they stated the entire assembly needed to be replaced and that my passenger side was starting to corrode and should be replaced at the same time. told me the module went bad. After doing some research I found out that you can just replace the module and not the whole assembly. Asked the dealership about it and they said, "I guess you can, we never checked with the parts department we just assumed". The service tech then preceded to tell me my problem was the module sparked and melted to the plastic assembly.

I clearly knew at this point he was lying so I decided to check it out for myself. Here are some pictures of how much of the front end needs to be removed to get at them. It took me about 2 hours to remove it all and 30mins to put it back together.

I noticed in the instructions it says to disconnect the negative cable on the battery, I did not do this. How much of a chance is there a serious injury could happen and what steps should I take to prevent such a thing other than removing the negative cable?

Thanks

With a 12VDC power source, chances are slim that it could do any real damage. With dry skin and without a good path to ground, you probably wouldn't even feel anything if you touched the positive terminal on the battery.

I think part of the reason they say to disconnect the negative terminal is to also prevent damage to the car's electronic system.
