OEM Remote Start for GC SRT8 2012 Model

Has anyone had this fitted after their vehicle has arrived in Australia. I have my SRT8 Vapor arriving in the next few weeks and I'm interested in installing the factory remote start.

You won't be able to buy the remote start in Australia, and if you get it from the US you won't find an Australian dealer who will reflash your GC to recognise the remote start as there not legal in Australia

As I said in the other thread, remote start is not technically illegal under the Australian Road Rules. It's illegal to leave your car unlocked or unsecured, or to leave the engine running and move more than 3 metres away, but there is no mention anywhere of starting the car before you approach. I will check with the boys in Traffic and the Scalies when I get back to work, but I can't see any problem with it. The car cannot be driven in remote start mode; the car needs to be unlocked, the key needs to be inside, and you have to press the Start/Stop button before you can go anywhere.

Isn't that the issue?

The remote start works up to 100 metres away, by line of sight.

Therefore the car will be running with you more than three metres away.

ARR 213(2) If the driver will be over 3 metres from the closest part of the vehicle, the driver must switch off the engine before leaving the vehicle.

You have to turn it off before leaving. Another subsection covers removing keys. No offence for the engine running with you >3m away if the car is started before you enter. Having studied Law and now being a cop, I can tell you the points of proof for the offence do not encompass remote start.

You also have to look at the purpose of the section as a whole too, which is to prevent car theft. As the car cannot be driven in remote start mode it doesn't fit the purpose of the legislation either.

I'll check with the OIC of prosecutions too, because ultimately he'd be the one to decide whether or not there's enough evidence for a charge to be laid.

Back at work on Monday. I'll report back after then.

No matter how you interoperate that section of the law, you can not buy the remote start in Australia and no one has found a dealer that will reflash your GC if you install the remote start after buying it from over seas, have fun getting your insurance company to pay if some thing goes wrong that can be traced to the remote start as they are considered illegal by the automotive industry in Australia

I can recall when fog lights and reversing lights were illegal.

I have actually went down the path of installing the remote start and did get the dealer to reflash / upgrade the software to suit.

However the vehicle would not start. Subsequent investigation revealed that the WIN module and the steering shaft lock module have to be replaced and reflashed as a pair for Australian vehicles.

Because my new WIN module that came with the remote start kit had been reflashed when installed, and because they can only be flashed once, I would have to repurchase a third WIn module, plus a steering shaft lock module and retry. To buy the pair in Australia was going to cost circa $1,200 with no gurartanee that even then the remote start would work.

I could import the parts for less than half that cost however I could not get confidence that the steering shaft lock module would work for the right hand drive Australian models as part numbers would not 100% match. Plus the labour to R&R and the risk that it wouldn't work anyway, I decided that it wasn't worth the risk.

Thanks for the info.

Bugger. Guess I won't bother trying then. Thanks for the heads-up.
