How-to - Basic Maintenance
On This post I will cover some basic Maintenance Items . such as changing oil , transfer case fluid, etc.

Most of this will be the same steps for every Jeep And I will post more from time to time as I find them

How to change Differential fluid ( without removing the cover). Here is a tip if you decide to remove the cover . I have never been really lucky with getting silicon to seal , so I would make a gasket out of cork material ( you can get this at any auto parts store .
I would use the cover as a template and just make cut the inside of the gasket leaving about 1” from the outer edge in .
Then when installing , still used a thin layer of silicon to hold the gasket in place while reinstalling the bolts.

Jim Watson,

New member, about to be new Jeep owner.

My 2014 Grand Cherokee will have the 5.7 Hemi and 8 speed transmission. All of my past vehicles have used Mobile 1 for engine and transmission.

Any cautions? Also read paper that urged only 5w 20w for engine.

The oil change quide for the 3L diesel is for the Merc diesel. How about one for the new VM Motori 3L CRD?

The cabin air filter removal requires a bit of magic - pressing the glove box sides together very hard was not enough. Could barely release the driver's side stud but not the passenger side. Is there a secret ? (2012 WK2)

hi everyone I am new and excited to be here. I just bought 2004 jeep gc limited 4.7 liter v8 and any tips hints and diys to make it more perfect than it already is are greatly appreciated. Please email me at Oh before I forget the moron used car dealer that I bought it from doesn't know if the oil is synthetic or not. Whats the final word on correct oil, ps fluid, tranny and coolant

Welcome to the garage Peter.
Regarding engine oil, you can use dino or synthetic.5W30 or 0W30. I prefer synthetic.
Power steering fluid is a synthetic fluid for which Chrysler has a special P/N, but i use a local brand.
The transmission is a 5-45RFE, which uses ATF +4 or competative. This is a synthetic fluid as well.
Differentials use 75W140 (for heavy duty or towing) and needs a limited slip additive when there are vari loks in the diffs (quadra drive or tow package). I have Identification plates on both diffs stating to use 80W90 (open diffs).
The T-case uses a special mopar fluid, which is just Mobil 424.
Also don't forget the brake fluid (should be changed every 2 years) and the coolant.

thanks frango100 for your response, am a little confused, what should I use, Valvoline, Castrol, etc 10w30? and which power steering fluid, also which coolant? I have an autozone near me but no one seems to know. I don't wanna mess anything up. thank you for the specifics.

The engine oil should be a 5W30 or even 0W30. The first number gives an indication of the viscocity when cold, while the second number is an indication of the viscocity when at operating temperature. A 0W oil doesn't mean that it has no viscocity, it has the viscocity of a straight O oil. It is important to have a low viscocity at startup, to have the oil as soon as possible at the more far away lubricating points (the camshafts) (most of the engine wear is caused during cold startup).
So a 0W oil is good for that, but normally they are more expensive. A 5W is cheaper and acceptable (and even given by the jeep manuals). I do not swear with a certain brand of oil, while some say that Amsoil is better. I would recommend however a full synthetic type, which have shown to be superior over the dino oils.
For power steering fluid jeeps recommends Mopar power steering fluid or equivalent. This fluid is a synthetic fluid as well and i run a paralel local brand synthetic for years without problems. Your jeep has a hydraulic driven radiator cooling fan, which uses the fluid (and pressure) from the power steering system.
Not that easy to get all fluid out and depending on your abilities you maybe could better leave it to a specialist to do. If you want to do it yourself i could give you some guidelines though.
By the way, the transmission uses two internal filters which should be changed: a round spin-on return filter and an oval inlet filter. This last one needs to be 4x4 (at least i expect your jeep is 4x4). Tony "TJXJWJ"did a writeup on the transmission service.
The coolant should be an Ethylene Glycol type. Jeep uses a 5 years coolant, but i don't recommend to leave it in for 5 years. The engine is build partly from steel and partly from aluminum and those two metals have a different electrical potential, which means that the aluminum will be eaten away when there is no good corrosion protection in the coolant (this process is called electrolysis and is a problem for all modern different metal engines). There are some horror stories of failing head gaskets due to the aluminum from the head which was eaten away.
Also this engine can easily form sludge in the oil galleries when the PCV system is not working well. The PCV valve is quite cheap and recommended to be changed on regular basis. Jeep says to check it every 30.000 miles, but for the price (around 10 USD) i would just change it. It will also easily break when you want to remove the hose from it (how do i know this :rolleyes:), so better have a new one on hand.
I would do a full tune-up of the engine: engine oil and filter, air cleaning filter and new plugs.

frango you are the man!! Thanks for that in depth insight, I am very capable working on cars, heck any machinery LOL, just don't wanna make any mistakes 'cause all I have been reading is about bad oil this good fluid that...know what I mean,LOLOLO. I really appreciate your info, thanks again.!!!!
