Yes, the backup lamp switch is part of the TRS/solenoid assy inside the tranny. I think that the only solution is a new assy. I took my solenoid assy apart for cleaning and the switches are inside a sealed housing. (there are several switches in there, like the Park/Neutral switch)
Attached a picture of the assy, which shows the 5 switch activation pins. This assy is mounted on top of the valve body. The valve body has to be removed before this assy can be removed. Not too difficult to do on your own.
Also a good moment to install a transgo shiftkit:D

I've been having nearly the same problem with my reverse lights, but mine will always switch on if I throw it into neutral first and then reverse. I would imagine it's the same problem.

I think it is. The switch is most probably sticking and when throwing the shift lever in Neutral first, it comes loose again.
A new solenoid assy cost around USD 280 at www.electricaladvantage.com. The original solenoid block has a black connector, but these are not made anymore. If you can find one, its most probably a rebuild. The new solenoid assy on sale now has a white connector (and completely different solenoids inside, which seems to be better) and must be changed together with a new TRS selector plate.
