Steering Wheel Controls

I was driving home today and attempted to make a call by pressing the phone button. The phone wouldn't activate. After a few attempts I realized that except for cruise control, none of the steering wheel controls were working. Nor were the lights on the buttons lit. I assumed I had a blown fuse or that there was some kind of weird defect. I wasn't able to find any info on this site.

A quick Google search lead me to the Jeep Wrangler site and owners had reported the same issue. Several people had posted that blowing the horn solved the problem.

I walked outside, got in and started the JGC. None of the lights on the steering wheel controls were lit. Nor did any of the buttons work. I honked the horn and the steering wheel controls lit up!!!! I was able to use all of the controls and make a phone call. Problem solved!!! That is the weirdest thing I have ever seen!!! But it saved me a trip to the service department.

Anybody else experience that problem?

Re: Steering Wheel Controls

I am having the same problem, which started yesterday. The horn thing did nothing. The steering wheel radio controls and front buttons just stop functioning. Cruise control works fine. Radio and phone works fine. Just the steering wheel buttons do not work. Any suggestions out there? Is there a diable somewhere I might have activated when playing with my RER Nav system? Thank you in advance.

Re: Steering Wheel Controls

I had previously had the opposite problem: My cruise control would not work all of the time, but the other buttons would work. Now, the cruise control button is the only one that does.
Other sites recommend these things:
Strike the wheel in the 2 o'clock position
Honk the horn (for at least 1/2 second)
Check/replace the wiring harness
The clock spring needs to be reset
