Do I Have To Bleed/Purge Cooling System

I just replaced my thermostat yesterday cause I was getting some leaking around the housing. the gasket on the old one had worn a hole through it. I've read where some people say you have the purge the system and others say it's not necessary at all. Any opinions on this?

Also, If I do need to bleed the system, what is the best way? Thanks

I usually always try to purge all the air out .

Just bleed the system to be sure. make sure your car is full of coolant. Let the car idle keep watching the temp gauge and loosen the small allen screw until you hear either air or coolant come out. Then make sure there are no bubbles. Your temp gauge shouldnt go much past half. If it does then you probably have more bubbles.

i changed the thermostat in march and did not bleed system. Havent had a problem until yesterday and i noticed the gauge went up past half. never been that high. is it possible to have air bubbles in system this long after i changed it. when i bleed it, does that cap have to be on or off. thanks
