Bad vibration in steering wheel!

My 1999 grand cherokee 2 wd has developed a vibration or wobble that seems to be heat related. It drives fine In the morning, but coming home in the afternoon, it starts after about 10 miles, sometimes very severe. After i stop at at light or stop sign it stops but usually starts back. Anybody know anything about this? Thanks for any help!

Re: Bad vibration in steering wheel!

typically a steering wheel shimmy is a tire balance issue... be it a failing tire, or just an out of balance wheel.

You could be dealing with a caliper concern, it may be dragging a bit so when the rotor gets good and hot it deforms and the shimmy in the wheel could be the caliper dragging at different points through the wheel rotation. The WJ has caliper issues so this may be the first place to look.

It must be the calipers or rotors, because today was a cold day in north ga. , and coming home it drove just fine. How can I tell exactly which part it might be?

drive a mile or 2 down the road then get out and feel the front wheels, if the brake is dragging, the wheel will be much hotter than a non dragging wheel. Otherwise pull your front wheels off and look at your inboard pads, odds are good at least one will be abnormally worn compaired to the other pads. The slider seize up on these.

Your going to be looking at a new caliper, pads, and rotors... Teves calipers were changed out for akebono calipers (different design). If you have the Teves calipers I would suggest replacing both for the akebono style calipers. The Teves calipers have a large wire on the face of the caliper.

Thanks, 2005jgc! It's the right front. When I got home today I felt each wheel and the right front was so hot, when I touched the rotor my finger smoked! Guess I will need rotor and caliper.

Hey 2005JGC, will it be alright to put the akebono caliper on the right for now, and later put on the left?
