Clunking, something lose or broken??

Hi All, Im the new owner of a '02 Jeep GC Larado sport 4x4 with the 4.0.

While driving i hear a loud clunking sound as if something is hitting the bottom of the jeep. It is something loose or broken, and not the drive shaft or loose exaust (but it kind sounds like that) seems to eminate fron near the front under the seats or possibly the engine compartments. I've checked the drive shaft, exaust, engine, transmission mouts, but nothing seems to be loose. It happens whenever i hit a bump or rough patch of road. Any ideas what it might be?

Also, there is some kind of bracket, with a rubber bushing that looks as though it might have been connected to the OEM exaust andbolted to the side/top of the tranny pan. It must be there for something? its loose and dangeling but not big enough to cause the noise i hear. Any ideas?

Welcome to the garage.
The bracket indeed was used for the original exhaust pipe.
And regarding the sound, its almost impossible to tell without seeing the jeep. Since you only hear it when going over a bump, it must be something with vertical play. Are you sure the exhaust canīt move at the point where it should be connected to the bracket?

Ok, going through suspension components possible culprit;
Sway bar mount bushings
Sway bar links
Track bar bushings
Control arm bushings
Shock bushings

Thanks for the responses guys, I was able to get it up on a lift last night, and indeed everything on the passanger side needs replaced. It looksd as though someone only replace the bushings on the driver side (almost brand new). And closer examination of the tranny mount has revealed that the rubber has seperated from the steel and is likely the source of the noise i'm hearing.

So it looks like i'm gonna need those nickles and dimes.... :^) :/

On a brighter note, the Jeep is from Virginia, i'm in Ohio, and I dont think I'v ever seen so much factory paint on the underside of any of my vehicles before! Not sure if i can work on it without rust in at least one of my eyes...
