Power Steering Fluid

over the past 2-3 days, my power steering pump has been growling pretty bad. my jeep just hit 40,000 miles yesterday. i checked the power steering fluid and it is milky brown. i'm going to drain it and replace it with fresh fluid. the serpentine belt looks fine. can i pick up an approved fluid at autozone, advance, etc. mopar recommends "MoparŪ Hydraulic fluid/Power steering fluid p/n 5142893AA" but i can't get any until next week. any input is appreciated.

i drained the old fluid and replaced with new mopar fluid and it's still growling bad. i'm sure the power steering pump is shot. it's not too bad while you're driving but if you turn the steering wheel while sitting still, it growls something fierce. sounds like chewbacca. does anyone have any experience replacing the pump. looks like it's right on top. anything i need to know about.

Re: Power Steering Fluid

Mine self-destructed, fortunately while in warranty. Growled like a beast. Turned out that pieces of it had gotten into the rack, requiring it's replacement too.

Fluid was fine in mine too, never got low. It just suddenly started making a LOUD moaning noise when I was parallel parking it. It only made the noise with the wheels turned tight. It got progressively worse within a few miles driving. Next time parking it started making the growl/grinding noise. The moaning noise was now constant with the growl only happening with the wheels turned. This too got worse within a few more miles driving. Nothing out of the ordinary lead up to this failure. No other work being done (no Jiffy Lube nitwit eff'ing something up) or anything other than just regular road driving.

I know this thread is old but

I am experiencing that exact same problem. I will look tomorrow and see if I can find the reservoir that I need to replace and look at if it looks easy enough but does it for sure fix the problem? Have many of you guys experienced this problem?
