Breaking in my 2014 GC Limited

Any suggestions on wise break-in procedures. Owner's manual suggests brief periods of full throttle, but not clear on mileage plateau. Also, have asked for opinions on synthetic vs blend for lifetime practice.

Anybody?

You want to vary engine RPMs and loads. Accelerate briskly, then let it decelerate, etc. Hilly terrain is ideal. Long periods at constant speed on flat highway should be avoided. Best to run in sport or tow/haul mode for this because it will hold RPMs better, rather than always upshifting when you decelerate. Occasional full throttle is okay and even recommended in the manual, but not from a dead stop, and do not let it rev to redline.

The specified break-in period is in the manual. It was 350 miles I think on my 2012 - which is not very much. Modern manufacturing tolerances/techniques make all this largely irrelevant anyway, your engine will probably be fine no matter what you do to it.

You also want to let the engine go through hot/cold cycles, i.e let it warm up and then cool down, don't try to "get the break-in out of the way" by covering all 350 miles at one go.

I've always driven them very hard for the first 1000 miles. No jack rabbit starts for the first few hundred miles, but there's a lot of wide open throttle acceleration. I then change the oil around 1000 miles with synthetic, then again about 4-5000 miles.

I had thoughts of maybe getting in on the DC group buy in Virginia, but would be heading home to Long Island. I had no problem going down there because of family in the area, but my one concern was the trip home on I-95 and not doing the correct break in.

Thoughts?

Stay off the interstates for the trip. I think that would be a more fun way to get acquainted with your new ride anyway.

I'll throw in the the anti-normal break in. Drove my 01 XJ from Muncie, Indiana (RIP Jeep Wharehouse) to central PA (500+miles). Tried to vary the MPH's on the way home, but I'm sure the last 200 miles was all freeway (had to get home for work).

127,000 miles later, no problems what-so-ever...granted it's the undestructable 4.0 litre ( synthetic since 1000 miles)
