Rear end noise

Hey guys my '02 Grand Cherokee WJ has recently started making a knocking noise when the rear wheels hit bumps. It's gotten worse over the last week & now when I take off from a stop it happens for 2-3 seconds sounding like the same noise, but multiple times like something is dragging against a moving part. It's more severe when I make a right turn from a stop (shifting the vehicle weight to the left side) & almost never happens on a left turn.

I replaced the rear shocks & stabilizer links yesterday because it needed it & was hoping that was the problem, but its made no improvement in the noise.

Any ideas before I go pay for diag?

Thanks for the help

Thanks for the reply. I took a really good look at everything when I has the wheels off to do the shocks & stabilizer links. I thought it might be the exhaust bouncing too, but it has a normal amount of play & the hangers look good. Plus the exhaust runs out the passenger side of the rear & my noise is definitely located in the driver side back there. My thought is something to do with the axle, or the control arms. Any other ideas?

Well I appreciate the advice. I was underneath again today checking out everything & its all in good shape. I checked the u-joints & springs again & they're fine, the exhaust has a minimal amount of movement, its making me think its in the axle possibly, but it doesn't seem consistent with the type of noise. I'm going into my mechanic on wednesday if I can't solve it.

Re: Rear end noise

my guess from the sound would be the sway bar bushings or the end links. had a 95 avenger had bad sounds back there and i changed the sway and mounts. thing sounded new again.. if there is no play when ur tugging on the sway bar its not saying that there not bad, you wont know there bad untill u get them off and there worn out feeling theres pressure on the bar so that is maybe why u cant move it enough to see if its that, but driving over a bump will move it. see? hope this helps u out.

Hey, Not sure if you found a cure or not. Took mine to the dealer under warranty after they had the rear axle replaced?!?? Anyhow, drove them and me crazy, they gave up. I persisted and figured out mine was due to both lower rear shock mounts had just enough clearance even though the bolts were torqued down right. Picked up some copper oil drain plug washers of the same inner diam...1/2 I think?....installed one on each side between the shock and the inside of the mount and no more noise..yeah! It was a little tight getting it in, yet that fixed it. So much for the dealer?! Good luck, hope this helps.

Im thinking the bearing retainer collar has slipped, causing the axle to walk around.. (this has happened to me)
