SRT8 rims for offroad use

Hi guys

Im new to the forum so my apologies if this has been covered somewhere else, i read through nearly every thread with srt8 in it via search button but couldnt really get a solid answer to my question.

Im yet to purchase a WJ as im waiting for something decent to come onto the market, anyhow..... I love the look or 20" SRT8 rims on them and would like to know if its a suitable sized rim to have for offroad use?

Im not talking anything stupid serious in terms of rock climbing, or water bed crossings etc, just the occassional trip on the coast to access decent fishing spots, and the tracks required to get to some of these spots arent that gnarly but definately come across pot holes etc along the way.

Ive never owned a 4x4 before but have always been involved with people/family who have had them and they have always said to never go above a 17" rim when wanting to drive in sandy/boggy locations, the smaller the better due to having a bigger walled tyre. This is because you can let your tyres down more so than on a bigger sized rim and then have less chances of getting a puncture if you hit something hard unexpectedly and create more traction with deflated tyres.

I hope I explained this correctly....anybody care to share their experiences/knowledge on the matter?

When i get a WJ or WG as they are called here in Australia I will fit a lift kit of 2" so thought id mention that incase it matters.

Thanks in advance :D

I thought about doing this for a while but decided against it due to the monetary cost of it. When I was looking into it, you would need to buy the srt8s, the tires, and a lift kit. The srt8s were gonna cost me about $1000. Then all the off-road tires (that have a decent tread) that have a 20" diameter are 33s/34s/etc and they were running about $400 a piece. So that's another $1600 for tires. Finally, that big of a tire wouldn't fit very well. It would require some modding of the wheel wells and a lift kit for clearance.

Which SRT8 style are you going with? Gen 1 or Gen 2 rim?

Will it work? Yes. Practical? Maybe.

Not entirely sure on the difference, if my thinking is correct the series 1 is on the WK GC SRT8.

The link below shows the rims im after as seen on scotts red SRT8

I only after replicas, and i wasnt aware id need 33" or 34" tyre though....hmmmm

Would a 2" lift be sufficient then?

The Gen 1 came with the WK and the Gen 2 came with the WK2.

You don't NEED to run 33/34 but in the US those were the only tires I could find that fit a 20" rim and had a decent/aggressive tread on it.

oh ok.....id imagine that would throw the speedo out quite a bit then?

If i went for a smaller sized tyre to suit the rims would it effect the performance of the 4x4 capabilities offroad much? I realise a tyre with a smaller wall cant be deflated as much as a tyre with a much bigger wall but will it be an issue in soft sand as much or not?

There is a website where you can input your current tire size against your standard size and it tells you the difference between your actual speed and what the speedo will say.

It comes down to how much you want to be able to wheel it. If your just taking it down the mild trails, I think you could sneak by without a lesser tire but if you want it to be able to go through the mud then I think your gonna need to go with the bigger tires due to the tread.

I would look around and see what you can do in tires. I found that that was the most difficult thing to get right.

Ok thanks for that.

Are there any members who have 20" rims that can share their experiences with taking them offroad??? How their car handled....pros and cons etc???

I don't believe so. Everyone I can think of that's running 20" srts is a street member.

There is one WK thats running reps and lift and offroad tires but I don't recall who right now? It's a black WK.

Anyways, I wouldn't attempt it unless you use a decent size tire, you need the siedwall to protect those expensive rims and still have offroad ability. Yes it will throw the speedo but thats a given when you start getting into offroad mods.

Also don't use staggered wheels use the fronts on back also that will save a lot of headache.

I was looking at this also but cheaped out.

If you remember who it is lemme know! I wanna see pics but the best I did was photoshop it together.
