Towing a garden tractor w/ the V6

Went on a little 600 mile round trip to pickup a new to me John Deere garden tractor. Longest trip yet trailering in this vehicle, but not the heaviest load pulled. Rented a uhaul trailer, unfortunately I couldn't rent one way, so I had to pull the unloaded trailer about 300 miles, which sucked. But once I had a load back there, once again the Jeep handled it great. Pretty flat terrain but I had more then enough power to pull the ~2000lb loaded trailer, never saw a significant rise in any critical vehicle stats. Braking was better then expected even throwing in a few emergency stops (no brakes on trailer).

Part of the trip was in the pooring rain and I found the SNOW mode to provide more confident traction then AUTO. In general I have been pretty disappointed with the AUTO program. I also think these Michelin tires are just terrible in wet weather, I cannot wait to get a better poor weather tire on. I got about 19 mpg which was within 1/2 mpg of what I usually get, considering my RRO roof rack.

Nice. You must have really wanted that JD, and found a good deal. I bought one about 6 mi away last summer. My Jeep handled it well also :).

Sure beats needing the John Deere to pull the Jeep. :)

Glad to hear it was a good trip.

Re: Towing a garden tractor w/ the V6

I towed my new bike home last year with my V6. 500lb bike plus 600lb trailer. It was like nothing was back there at all.

I will say, I hate small, empty trailers. They bounce too damn much. I had some dipsh*t lady pull out in front of me and stop blocking 2 lanes as I was coming down the road at about 50...I thought I was going to lose the empty because it bounced so bad when I slammed into the brakes. The guy behind me left rubber on the road trying not to hit the trailer, I don't know how he didn't hit it. When I got out to check the hitch and what not, he was so close I couldn't have put my hand in between us. The lady had a car full of kids and was screaming as I'm barreling towards her car...

For those other people towing w/ the V6, do you have the factory tow package w/ auto leveling shocks? I have a dealer installed hitch so just the standard shocks but I haven't had any problem with sag on the rear end when towing. I recently picked up another Deere tractor, no picture of the trailer hitched but here it was loaded up;

Even with that heavy snow plow on the tongue I didn't have any issues w/ the level of the rear. I ask because I am debating upgrading the shocks and springs and one option would be to go w/ the auto-leveling rear but it seems to tow FINE with a fixed shock.

Z, I suspect that if you're only going to be towing these relatively light loads, you're not going to have any issues. In your photo, your load actually looks pretty well balanced, too, and that's going to help you control tongue weight.
