2014 Transmission

One of the big pluses of the 2014 redesign, according to the experts (and many of you) is the new 8-speed transmission. My 2014 v6 is my first Jeep product, so I don't have anything to measure the new transmission against personally. I'm wondering if you gentlemen are feeling the same things I describe below.

I've been less than pleased with the feel of the shifting from a dead stop (stop light, stop sign, etc). It feels very sluggish to me in 1st and 2nd, when taking off. Once it hits 3rd, it starts to smooth out, but the first 25mph is not as smooth as I would prefer. When I turn off EcoMode, the vehicle is more peppy in 1st and 2nd and the awkward shifting is less noticeable. My very amateur, non-expert opinion is that the shift points are made at too low an RPM level. Would you experts chime in on this?

On the flip side, as I slow down, towards a stop, the engine's downshifting can cause the vehicle to "lurch" forward, which is somewhat uncomfortable. From my perspective, I would prefer the process to feel smoother.

The feeling of the transmission in lower gears is my only complaint. I'll get used to it, I have no doubt, but it's something that I'm not 100% satisfied with.

I feel the same way specialy for the downshift part. 5speed trans on my 12 Overland was nice and smooth when downshifting.

I agree with your observations. I was surprised at how many were commenting on the smoothness of the tranny.

That said, the owners manual says to give the tranny up to 1000 miles to find itself. At 300 miles I'm not complaining ... but monitoring the situation.

Sadly, I'm at 1,400 miles, so that 1,000 mile watch period is up. This may just be as good as it gets.

Lugging an engine is never good but a modern V6 seems comfortable down to 1200 rpm. It does help the EPA cycle to shift up as soon as the engine can support the load.

I suspect what it needs to learn is part throttle performance. One thing to check would be PLA requested vs actual.

You sound very knowledgeable, but I may need you to translate those for people like me who don't know much about trannys.

It appears that ECO mode is doing EXACTLY what it's designed to do. It defaults to on so that they can get and EPA estimate of 25mpg.

How do you like the vehicle with ECO off? If you like it...keep ECO off...its only a push of a button.

I feel the same way. Part throttle is very sluggish. The worst part is when you're coming to a stop and it awkwardly down shifts into 1st with a thump .

You mean lack of smoothness...... ;)

Hahaha, you're not the first person who has ever said that to him.

Re: 2014 Transmission

In addition to the lurching, I also noticed if you let off the gas when cruising at in-town speeds, the tranny is often too eager to shift, causing the vehicle to slow down, which in turn requires you to give it some more gas to keep from slowing down too much. I remember this happening with the 2012 and 2013 I tested out too though.

One other thing I noticed, and I'm not sure if it's the tranny or the brakes. But just before coming to a complete stop, as in when going from about 2MPH to 0MPH, I feel "something". I want to say a mini-lurch, but maybe I'm explaining it wrong. Anyway it almost feels like it's in the brakes (even though I haven't noticed any issues with the brakes at any other speeds/times) but I'm also wondering if maybe it's the tranny. Anyone else notice this? It happens fairly often for me.

In my experience so far, and granted this is the first modern car I've ever driven, I've only got about 500 miles on it, I only drove the 5 speed in the 2011-2013 for a very, very brief test drive, and I'm very happy with the vehicle and also still extremely glad that I waited for the 2014, but I must admit I think the tranny is/was probably a little overrated from a knowing-when-and-when-not-to-shift/shift-smoothness perspective, if only just a tad, at least after only 500 miles. But then maybe it's me that's the problem, and not the tranny. :)

I'm sure programming updates will follow. You can have the best transmission in the world (which this may be) but if the programming isn't right that doesn't mean a thing. Chrysler has somewhat of a history in my opinion of releasing these things and then fixing it later with software updates. I think the trans is very smooth going up through the gears. Its just when slowing down that some of the shifts don't seem to be quite in the right spot. I remember when these first came out in 2011 with the 5 speed and I got mine even though it had a trans that had been around the shift program was a joke. I had the pentastar and it couldn't get out of its own way as soon as you took off it was in second gear bogging the engine down. At the time I couldn't believe it got released like that. They soon after came out with a software flash that fixed the issue. I would expect the same at some point to take care of the complaints with this one. Overall though I think it pretty good.
