I need help with electrical problems

I have a 2007 Grand Cherokee SRT8. Once in a while, the headlights will go on & off quickly. Over the past few months, I have been driving & lost all gauges & electronics inside the car. There were 2 codes when the check engine light was on last month, U1403 & U1411.

The next 2 times, there was no check engine light. When it lost electronics, the engine & transmission are fine, I just had to stop & restart the vehicle to get my cluster working again.

A couple of times when I started it, the lights on the cluster went through the startup cycle a few times, then everything worked fine with no diagnostic lights on.

This morning, I drove my mother to work & it ran fine. When I got back in & started it to come back to work, the gauges didn't work, I had no clock or compass & no EVIC. The only thing showing was the gear shift indicator. I drove a little up the street to pull off & restart, but before I did the gauges started working & I had ESP, BAS & the check engine light on.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the problem? I've checked the grounds & I'm not sure what to check next. Possibly a problem the FCM or a short in a harness?

Sorry for the long post, but I have no idea what to check next.

search on ignition switch and multi-stalk. both are common faults that cause issues you are having with the WK.

for about 100 you can buy both parts and replace them yourself. easy peasy/

Also get the battery checked, lots of weird electrical gremlins when it starts to go bad.

Yup. Probably get that first.......you need a load test on current battery. Always for that first.

This battery is 6 months old, but I'll test it to be sure it's good

Re: I need help with electrical problems

Mysterious, unexplained electrical problems in the WK1 SRT can generally be traced to the ESM (electronic shift module) circuit board. Under the shift lever, there is a circuit board where copper contacts move around in response to the shifter movements. Over time, the circuit board gets dirty from dust, grime, grease and normal wear and tear, and the copper contacts no longer make good contact. All hell breaks out, and strange electrical problems occur at random, with no particular pattern. The worst is dropping into Limp Mode, where you are limited to 5 or 10 mph, even with your foot to the floor. This situation is super dangerous if you stall in the fast lane of an Interstate.

This shift module is made in Germany, so the recommended Chrysler fix is to replace it, which costs over $1000 plus installation. The 2006 SRT owners were the first to be faced with this expensive dilemma, and one ingenious owner discovered the circuit board can actually be cleaned, and he repaired it himself. I believe there is a thread still floating around on this or the other Jeep SRT forum that describes the cleaning procedure.

I have had my dealer clean the circuit board three times on my 2006...at approximately 40,000, 90,000 and again on this very day, at 117,000 miles. The procedure takes about an hour, so it will cost around $100. The technician will remove the center console, the shift mechanism and finally the electrical components: the circuit board and contacts. He (or she) will then clean the board and copper components with a suitable solvent, dry with a soft cloth, and put everything back together.

Most, if not all, of your electrical problems should be solved, and you should be good for another 30,000 miles or so until the next cleaning. If and when you try this, please let me know your results. I hope this helps.

A follow up. I don't know how to link to a thread, but if you use the search function and look for thread "Need part #68004143AF ASAP" by member 06RC22 posted on 3/23/10, you will find it useful. Scroll down the entire thread, and you will eventually find instructions with links on how to clean the ESM circuit board. Good luck.

After all the time and energy I spent on this thread, I see it was posted more than two years ago. I don't know how it popped up as a new thread. Maybe some new readers with troublesome WK1 SRT's will find my comments useful. That's life.
