2012 Overland or 2014 Limited?

Hello jeepgarage....long time lurker, first time poster :D

I am currently an fj cruiser owner which I enjoy, but think it's time to step up to a larger (full 4doors) and more refined vehicle. I don't offroad as much as I should, but want to retain the capability in the event that I want or need to. This brings me to the wk2 world, and have been looking at both the new and used market.

At this point, it appears you can get a very low mileage 4wd hemi 2011 or 2012 Overland with the sweet saddle interior for about the price of a new 4wd v6 Limited without the Lux package (around 39k).

I'm torn between the luxuries of the overland (saddle napa leather interior, pano sunroof, hid headlights, etc) and the new technologies of the limited (unconnect, 8 spd tranny, refresh cluster and exterior).

Engine sizes aside, what is the opinion of this terrific community?

Welcome to JeepGarage!! As far as comparing the new 2014 Overland and Limited, take a look at the Features thread. To get the napa leather interior, pano sunroof, hid headlights, etc in the Limited you would need to get the Lux II package. There are some great deals on the 2013 models to be had. The ball is in your court on which way you want to go. Do you want a 2013 (1yr old model) or the brand new one? Test drive the 2011-13 and drive a 2014 to see what you like better.

Welcome to the forum!

I was actually picking between the exact same two models and totally agree a test drive is required.

For me, I decided the fancier upgraded interior (real wood trim, leather dash, saddle leather, etc) and extra features (air suspension, 20" wheels, etc) were more attractive than the upgraded electronics - because the 730 already does everything I want to do. Also, I didn't notice any big performance difference on the 8 speed with the V8 vs the six speed on the 2012 (I believe the gad mileage is basically identical) and actually prefer the exterior styling of the 2011-2013 MY.

My $0.02. Let us know what you decide!

There is another thread on the same topic a few pages back where people discuss the merits of getting a Limited and adding packages to it vs. Buying an overland straight up.

While looking for other options I found a 2013 overland with the hemi, adaptive cruise control, and saddle interior stickered at 48, xxx could get it out the door for 41900, the guy did want me to pay $400 cash for an employee pin though.

This is a little different though - since the OP is looking at an older MY Overland vs a 2014 Limited

2012 Overland hands down. I test drove a 2014 Overland today and the risk of problems (heard a weird noise in my left ear for most of the test drive) and the changes (8 speed and nav mean nothing to me) are in no way worth it to me, and the 2012 looks better and has flipper glass, hard drive, buttons for heated seats, buttons for ventilated seats, and button for heated steering wheel that are one touch, autostick, CD in stereo/nav unit. No way am I ever trading for a 2014, 2015, or 2016 I decided.

Cool enjoy that 2012,if you like it then it's never a bad decision.

I agree the 8spd doesnt make the driving experience enough to jump in a 14.

+1. If you are attracted to the saddle interior on 11-13's go for it. Only Jeep model for the 14 year is the black/sepia color combo in the SRT.

Re: 2012 Overland or 2014 Limited?

Thanks for your responses. I will definately heed the advice of you veterans and test drive both. I am particularly interested in hearing from those who were faced or are facing the same decision. As both models have different options that cannot be added to the other (at least not cheaply), it comes down to rationalizing what's of more importance or value.

2012 Overland
+Saddle interior
+Quadra lift
+Panoramic sunroof
+FCW & ACC
+5.7 hemi
+flipper glass
-Older front facia
-6 speed tranny
-Older rear deck
-730n rhr
-Older steering wheel
-Older gauges
-Older 20" wheels

2014 Limited
-Non Saddle interior
-No Quadra lift
-Single panel sunroof
-No FCW or ACC
-3.7 pent star (although I could probably afford the hemi)
-No flipper glass
+Newer front fascia
+8 speed tranny
+Newer rear deck
+8.4 unconnect
+Newer steering wheel
+New gauges
+Newer 20" wheels

I'm really struggling between these two. Thoughts?

Thanks mjodotcom, this is exactly the rationalization I am looking for.

SnoFire 03-31-2013 11:13 AM

So your trying to compare 2 different models?? Why not go Overland vs Overland.

Re: 2012 Overland or 2014 Limited?

Don't forget the price difference. Dealers are trying to push all the 12-13 MY out of their inventory. There are great incentives depending on the dealer.

Test drive both vehicles and let us know. Either way you'll win. :)
