Stereo Wiring Help Needed... '08 WK with RER/Boston System

So I've gotten knee deep in this, and it's not working the way I thought it would, so I'm looking for some guidance from all the stereo junkies out there. I'm sure it's something simple I've overlooked...

My goal was to maintain as much of the stock system as possible, without splicing wires unnecessarily or tapping in with LOC's as many have done. Plug and play would be ideal, and that is my challenge.

Vehicle is a 2008 WK Overland with the RER NAV and (formerly) Boston Sound-system

*I've searched on this site and other "un-named" sites as well as referenced WKJeeps.*

Step 1:
Upgraded all stock speakers with JL Audio components in all four doors. I had these left over from my last Jeep, which is why I used them. They sound great, and they're paid for.

Step 2:
Installed JL Audio Stealthbox

Step 3:
Bought the Metra 70-6514 harness and a LCi-6 to sum the signals. The purpose was to simply plug this into the rear amp connectors, ditch the Boston amp, and run wires to the LCi-6, then to a pair of JL Audio amps... 300/4 (doors) and 500/1 (stealthbox).

Following the handy pin-out diagrams on WKJeeps, I "tweaked" the Metra harness to capture the incoming front/rear audio signal from the factory Jeep Amplifier Connector C2, and routed them through the LCi-6 to RCA's going to my amps. OK so far... Then using the other half of the Metra harness, ran the now amplified speaker signal back to the factory Jeep Amplifier Connector C1, effectively powering the door speakers. Check.

So now, I've got all four components powered, the stealthbox booming, but I can't turn down the damn volume!

Any suggestions? Who else has completed a similar install, and how did you end up tapping the wires?

The 500/1 is a bit overkill for that sub... Im running the 250/1 on my stealth box and i can easily max it out and im only at 1/2 gain... Just sayin! LoL

Your issue is with the canbus system... I had the exact problem when i first installed my system... thats when i realized the stock radio uses the canbus system to feed the stock amp. I would up using a $20 LOC off the rear channel of the boston amp to feed my 250/1. Works absolutely flawless :D I even installed a sub level controller up front so i can independently control the sub and kill it when i dont want any bass.

If you want a cheap fix, ditch everything you just did... and run two LOCs off the BA amp to feed your 300/4 and use the pre out from the 300/4 to feed your 500/1. This will give you full volume control from your RER, but have everything powered on your JL amps. Just remember use one common ground point for your amps. I used one of the bolts that secures the stock ba amp as my ground point.

Hope that helps!

Just did this and am running into similar issues. To get volume to go away I had to unhook Boston Acoustics amp completely, I then used the AOEM-CHY from PAC to run RCA's to Alpine 5 channel amp. But I'm getting hissing and clipping past 14. The A holes from Extreme Auto Sounds butchered my amp wiring so I'm going to wire in my Alpine PXA-H650 processor in on Saturday to see if that gets rid of it. If that fails then I'm running all new speaker wire on Saturday.

I'm curious if the H/U controls the volume, or if the CANBUS signal going to the rear amp is responsible, then the volume is adjusted in the amp.

I'm not sure, but I'd guess this is the way the system attenuates directions and uconnect to the front driver's speaker....

Thoughts???

I would like to say the amp is the boss here, I plugged it in and it was ridiculously loud! Had to unplug it to get normal volume back.

Just to clarify, you totally removed the factory amp, and have full volume control at the H/U?

I've wired mine into the factory connectors, removed the factory amp, but have lost volume control.... Not sure if it's the LCi6 causing problems, or the removal of the factory amp.

It sounds like most people pick up the AMPLIFIED signal going to the rear doors. I'm trying to grab the native signal directly fom the head unit, without having to run RCA's from the H/U to the back of the Jeep.

Yes I took it out the equation. Used a PAC unit to send RCA signals back to Alpine amp. If I hook up the car amp with Alpine amp sound is beyond loud!
