Squeaky steering wheel--so annoying...

Yo,

Just wondering if anyone has a simple fix for what seems to be a common steering wheel squeak (both my '05 and my Dad's '05 have it but mine is a little worse). Basically the steering wheel squeaks at multiple points throughout all 360 degrees of rotation. Anytime I turn the wheel...squeak, squeak, squeak...bleh.

I'm not super confident about removing the air bag and steering wheel to fix it but I'm pretty sure the solution isn't to squirt WD-40 at it. I think the dealer once told me it was the dust seal or something...

Anyway, any help would be much appreciated.

Perhaps this is a good time to upgrade to that Overland wood grain steering wheel :D

it is either the clock springs, the headlight switch or the dust cover. The airbag is super easy to remove.
Just disconnect the negative terminal on the battery for about 30 minutes, depress the brake pedal for 30 seconds. You can alos pull the fuse after unhooking the battery. The airbag is just held on by two screws or two clips(depending on year) Unclip or unscrew to remove it.

That info is very helpful, thanks. Let me apologize for my ignorance but what purpose does depressing the brake pedal serve? I'm definitely fearful of the bag going off during the removal, which is largely why I haven't attempted to remedy the issue.

In general, I've definitely never removed an airbag or steering wheel before. Once the airbag is off I assume the wheel bolts onto the steering column somehow. Should I try to remove the entire wheel to clean and/or lubricate mechanical parts? Or would it be wise to plan on getting replacement parts (e.g., dust seal) first?

Again, thanks for the info and quick reply.

diconnecting the negative terminal takes away power to the bag and depressing the pedals rids the sytem of any stored power. You can also pull the fuse after doing what is above. For the steering wheel...I recommend a steering wheels puller. Theyare about $10 at autom parts stores. The WK wheel is held on by one nut. Its pretty simple. I would find out whats wrong first and then get what is needed.
