2014 Highlander vs JGC

Toyota announced the new Highlander recently.

Interior is much nicer than before, but exterior is really terrible and technology wise way inferior to JGC.

Do you see any competition here to affect pricing?

Looks like a minivan. No thanks and I don't think it is comptetition for the GC.

I haven't ever seen a Highlander that even piqued my curiosity.

Re: 2014 Highlander vs JGC

I believe Grand Cherokee is becoming a dying concept. Most SUVs transitioned into the unibody CUV and in doing so they become as potent off-road as any other awd car and were simply less roomy than a minivan and towed more. Look at at what happened to the Nissan Pathfinder.

I feel that there's nothing in the GM and Ford fleet that competes with a Jeep Grand Cherokee in terms of off-road capabilities. In terms of competing in the same segment, yes, you have the Explorers and the Traverse/Acadias but I doubt people cross-shop them as much as marketing would have us think. Traverse/Acadia and Ford Flex/Explorer are the new minivans. And frankly if I wanted just a larger than Subaru Forester SUV but I cared for nothing but dirt/3 inches of snow twice a year I would be buying a Honda Pilot.

The only equivalent cars to a Jeep GC are offered by Toyota [4Runner, Land Cruiser, Lexus GX460 (known as Toyota Prado elsewhere); LX81530], Nissan (XTerra) and VW (Touareg). And if you are not after true off-road capabilities and just want awd and dirt/snow confidence, while JGC is a great competitor, you will find cheaper, nicer alternatives, perhaps even cheaper from all the manufacturers mentioned here, including Honda and Infiniti.

definitely no comparison. The new Highlander has styling cues from the 2013 Subaru Tribeca. As someone else stated its becoming more of the new "mini-van segment" shame.

Saw it in NY last week. Looks pretty good in person.
Four words: Three rows of seats.
Anyone that has this requirement on their shopping list deletes the GC immediately.

Isn't the 3rd row seat optional so it could be gotten with or without it?
I saw the 2014 highlander and also wasn't impressed.

Highlander and JGC are two different classes of vehicle, IMHO...and my previous ride was a Highlander. Heavier, more powerful, better towing, off-road capability, etc., goes to the JGC. While they both qualify as mid-side SUV types, the Highlander comes from the same platform as the Camry. The platform the JGC is built on is much beefier. It's certainly very comfortable and capable, but nothing close to the JGC. What you want the vehicle to be able to do comes into play with the decision.

Re: 2014 Highlander vs JGC

The JGC and Highlander are two totally different vehicles aimed at different types of drivers.

People who like the JGC would probably also like:
- Porsche Cayenne
- Toyota 4Runner
- Range Rover (LR3/LR4/Sport)
- VW Touareg

People who like the Toyota Highlander would also probably like:
- Lexus RX
- Ford Explorer
- Mazda CX5/CX7/CX9
- Volvo XC90
- Nissan Murano

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is aimed at more "traditional" SUV buyers who want OFF and ON road ability, coupled with upper scale features. The Highlander is a Softroader/crossover vehicle aimed primarily at Socceer moms.

IMNSHO ;)

Not bad snipe you're really close to what I thought I did consider most of those except for the Four runner. I have a friend who buys those they're durable, decent on road, good off road, but the inside always seems cramped. I also did give the Explorer a couple of chances, but like you said I figured I needed something that can off road a little more without breaking it. Also the sync didn't work great in any I drove, the front wheel drive base, and mini van chassis finished it off for me.

They will definitely be cross shopped...

I cross shopped the 4runner also. I loved the 2001 limited my parents owned....but toyota seems to have fallen off on keeping up with the technology and value proposition. Minor things like no HIDs on a 45k 4runner...Were enough to turn me away.
