9 vs 19 speaker Harmon Kardon

Has anyone heard both? Thoughts? I'm liking the looks of the Overland better than the Summit, but the better audio seems to require the Summit.

Any real world opinions out there?

Thanks

Re: 9 vs 19 speaker Harmon Kardon

Keep in mind the 9 Speakers are Alpine and the 19 are Harmon Kardon so 2 different systems.

I listened to both and while the overland was very good and better than average, the Summit's were just that much better to my ears.

To me it's like the comparison of the V6 VS. Hemi.....Both will get you where you want to go, but the Hemi gets you there having a little more fun !! (The HK gets you there with better sound !!)

After asking the same questions, I went and Test Drove Both engines and listened to both Stero Systems using a SD card of MY favorite music and did it WITHOUT the Dealer in the car so I could jack it up !! Based on my testing I decided on a V8 for the Power and a Summit for the Stereo....now just waiting for a good deal !!

But each person has a different ear for music and feel for engine, so best to test them both yourself !!

Here is another thread on same topic:

I'm actually curious as to the locations of the 9 Alpine speakers standard on the Limited/Overland. I know of 6 (I think) and the subwoofer. Hopefully it isn't going to be too bad since I'll be coming from a Bose system in my Maxima.

EDIT: I knew I was going to find this somewhere:
Alpine System

front doors woofer/tweeter (4 total)
centre dash
rear passenger door (2 total)
tailgate area (2 total)
+sub

The old manufacturer calling multiple speakers per channel trick.

Yep, it's all marketing. I haven't heard either system yet so I can't comment there, but the Summit doesn't have 10 more speakers than the Overland. They are using a 2 way speaker and calling it two speakers. Not really the case.

I believe the 9 speaker system is one in each door, two in the dash, two in the cargo area (Not exactly sure where these are located), and one sub. That's 9 total. The Summit should add a center channel for 9 speakers, double that for using 2 way speakers, then add the sub for 19. In all reality, all you are getting is a little higher quality speaker (not much really) and an additional speaker in the center of the dash. I could be slightly off on speaker placement since I don't actually have my Jeep yet, but you get the idea.

They could have (And should have) called the Summit's stereo a 10 speaker system, because that's really what it is. It's like me replacing all the speakers in my Overland with 3-way speakers and calling it a 25 speaker stereo. It's all marketing...

They did the same thing in my 2012 Ram with the amplified Alpine stereo, which honestly didn't sound as good as the base 6 speaker system I had in my 2010. I've completely gutted the factory stereo and replaced with "Real" Alpine speakers and amps. Now it's actually worthy of the Alpine logo on the dash.

I agree with you completely (although I do not like either rim style) and I wish the HK Audio system was available in the Overland.

The Alpine system in my 2011 Limited was not the best -- IMO it had a very flat sound. The HK system in my previous '06 RR and current Benz is top-notch. There is no comparison between the two.

But I am not sure its reason enough for me to jump to the next trim level as I could take or leave the other Summit features

This was the struggle I had between the Overland and Summit. I hate the body style on the Summit, but love the sound system and headlights. I decided on the Overland with the option to upgrade the stock speakers and probably get better sound than the stock Summit and got what in my opinion is the better body style.

My plan is to do a loaded Limited and use the cost savings as compared to the Overland to buy an aftermarket system that doesn't suck.

I would sure hope the HK is leaps and bounds better than the pathetic Alpine system. If you look at the Alpine system on paper, you initially think "wow -- must be good". Your ears tell you differently. It's horrible compared to what it should be.

And my plan is to ditch the cargo area sub and maybe even the tailgate speakers in the name of weight reduction. A few pounds here and there and next thing you know you dropped enough to make a difference. I almost feel like getting Lexan for the sunroof.

Im sure you could buy 9 HK speakers and replace the factory amp with a better one for well under 1K minus install and im sure you would not be disappointed with the sound.
